The Government of India has successfully constructed nearly 40,000 km of rural roads using plastic waste under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). In the last two years alone, 13,000 km of roads have been built using this innovative and sustainable technique, marking a significant milestone in the country’s commitment to environmental stewardship and rural development.
Speaking at a media interaction today, Secretary of the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Vini Mahajan, emphasised the success of this initiative in addressing the dual challenge of plastic waste management and rural infrastructure development. She remarked, “These innovations showcase our commitment to sustainability and highlight our dedication to ensuring cleaner, more durable road infrastructure in rural areas. This achievement is a direct outcome of our focus on eco-friendly solutions.”
The use of plastic waste in road construction is a breakthrough in both waste management and infrastructure resilience. Roads built using this method demonstrate higher durability, with increased resistance to water and wear and tear, offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional road-building materials.
Ms. Mahajan also highlighted the progress made under the Swachhata Hi Seva-2024 campaign, supported by multiple Central ministries, states, and Union Territories. She noted that over 55% of villages have now been declared ‘ODF Plus Model,’ demonstrating sustained momentum in achieving rural cleanliness and sanitation goals. Additionally, the campaign has seen the deployment of over 5 lakh waste collection vehicles across the country, further advancing efforts in plastic waste and greywater management.
“Sanitation is a collective responsibility,” Ms. Mahajan added, “and the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign reflects our shared commitment to cleanliness. It is not just a milestone but an ever-evolving journey that requires continuous efforts from every level of society.”
The Ministry remains dedicated to innovative approaches in both infrastructure and sanitation, ensuring that sustainability is at the core of all future development. This initiative is part of the Government’s broader vision to create an integrated and eco-conscious approach to rural development, supporting India’s journey towards a greener future.
