Covering two hectares of the 90-hectare AYANA Estate in Jimbaran, Bali’s largest integrated resort, AYANA Farm is an organic oasis and learning centre that provides the estate with a wide array of high-quality produce and enables guests to experience time-honoured sustainable farming techniques. After undergoing months of production system and infrastructure enhancements, the reimagined AYANA Farm is now offering guests and the wider community an expanded range of immersive, educational, and enriching experiences.

These diverse new experiences invite visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of their surroundings while deepening their understanding of sustainability techniques, along with the agricultural practices that have shaped Bali for centuries. Agrarian culture and striving for ecological balance play a significant role in the spiritual lives of Balinese, and AYANA Farm is the perfect setting to delve deeper into the foundations of the island’s unique agricultural heritage.

Relax and learn

Through its use of eco-friendly and climate-smart practices – including soil health and biodiversity maintenance, water conservation, and resource optimisation – along with methods passed down through generations of Indonesian farmers, AYANA Farm is the ideal location for guests interested in learning about environmental sustainability and Bali’s ancient agricultural ethos.

To learn about the farm’s sustainability principles and traditional methods used to grow a diverse array of vegetables, fruits, herbs, edible flowers, and medicinal plants, AYANA welcomes guests and all community members to enjoy the complementary AYANA Farm Walk, which runs every Monday, Thursday and Saturday from 9am to 9.45am.

During the Rediscover Agriculture at AYANA Farm experience, guests can explore sustainable farming practices, participate in activities such as planting and harvesting, and learn about the farm’s Apotek Hidup, or living pharmacy, which highlights Balinese and Indonesian traditional medicinal knowledge. At the end of the visit – which runs every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday from 8.30am to 10am – participants create their own herbal teas using AYANA Farm organic edible flowers and herbs.

Turning to renewable energy and more

“The opening of the completely reimagined AYANA Farm reaffirms our commitment to using environmentally sustainable practices across our resorts and hotels, while also honouring local traditions,” says Giordano Faggioli, General Manager of AYANA Estate. “We are also proud to announce that AYANA Farm will shift to 100% solar energy this year,” Giordano continues.

“With the increase in travellers wanting to give back to the communities they visit and to form lasting connections, we believe AYANA Farm is set to become one of Bali’s standout eco-tourism destinations,” concludes Giordano.

Baros Maldives has recently launched a new online section aimed at raising awareness about the fragile marine environment, in addition to the island resort’s current sustainable tourism programmes. As the world celebrates Earth Day, Baros remains committed to promoting sustainable tourism, having been actively engaged in coral restoration and planting since 2006 to combat the adverse effects of rising water temperatures on corals.

Guests can participate in the coral restoration project by sponsoring coral frames, and the island resort employs a range of techniques to promote growth, including the use of nursery-like pools, suspended lines in the blue lagoon, the renowned Baros coral cubes and personalised frames with name tags and love messages. To date, 458 coral frames have been sponsored.

The Baros underwater ambassadors are passionate about educating guests on good water practices and spreading knowledge on sustainable tourism through the newly launched information hub. The dedicated section features entertaining short stories that provide valuable knowledge in an educational and playful way, revolving around marine flora and fauna, characteristics of resident marine creatures such as the story of Finny, the resident black-tipped shark, and the natural order of things underwater.

The Baros underwater ambassadors present a diverse range of information on the fragile marine ecosystem, its interconnectedness, and the natural balance that can easily be disrupted due to human behaviour.

At Baros, guests can explore these topics further with the underwater ambassadors while enjoying a range of marine activities, from coral cube planting to guided tours of snorkelling and diving at the world-class Baros house reef and other exclusive reefs teeming with rich marine life. The private island resort has also implemented eco-friendly practices to reduce its environmental impact, such as replacing plastic straws with paper straws, banning plastic bags, and using glass water and refreshment bottles that are reused for multiple fillings. Baros remains committed to continued progress in terms of sustainability, improving its services one step at a time.

Chandelao Garh was the seat of the Chandelao Thikana – an estate in the kingdom of Jodhpur which covered five villages. Today, it is an enchanting homestay where each room is different and has a story to tell

An enchanting eco-homestay which was built in the mid-18th century in the year 1744 by one of the greatest generals Rao Kumpa’s grandson, Rao Puranmal. Puranmal who annexed Sirohi for the Maharajah of Jodhpur was later granted the estate for his bravery in the battle and for providing a small cavalry for the Maharajah’s army.

chandelao room3Praduman Singh, who is the current heir and owner of Chandelao Garh shares, “This is my family home and it is an inheritance from 10 generations. We are located about 40 kms from Jodhpur which is a popular tourist destination. I grew up as a child here and then my parents moved to Jodhpur. Being an old and huge building, my parents could no longer afford to maintain it properly as the land which was there in the village belonging to us were substantially reduced due to the land ceiling Act. So I thought of starting a tourist venture as an eco-homestay since this was the place where my roots are and this is my identity.”

Off the beaten path

With sustaining a heritage comes vigilant responsibilities. Praduman left his job to carry on the family business on his own. To maintain the palatial property, Praduman invested all his savings. However, eventually he ran out of funds.

chandelao activity village walk potteryCreating awareness about Chandelao was also a challenge. Hiring also became more and more unaffordable.

Then suddenly the tide changed. Praduman met a Norwegian named Svein Wihelmsen who extended his financial support to the venture and there was no looking back!

Enter the hotel through the magnificent stone archway and you step into a bygone era. Before you looms the elegant original residency, it’s red Jodhpur sandstone carved in elaborate 18th century Rajput style.

In the 1990, the world had seen about 435 million travellers in different destinations across the globe. The number rose to more than 1.4 billion in 2018, but the area of those locations stayed the same. As eco-conscious individuals striving for eco-friendly tourism, our responsibility starts right at the beginning. That is, choosing the dream holiday spot. To conserve the ecosystem of an ecotourism destination, one may have to start with writing it off their bucket-list altogether.

Tourism is often responsible for putting a strain on the natural resources of a place. Despite usage of sustainable alternatives to travel or food, the act of tourism itself puts insurmountable pressure on land and water use, increases pollution at a faster rate, and poses dangers to endangered species. With travel bloggers being easily accessible on social media, all the adventure loving people have formed a virtual hub where locations that are best left untouched have been getting increased attention. Eco-friendly tourism has, thus, attained a broader meaning: abstaining from certain tourist destinations for their own sake. Wondering which places to exclude from your list? Here are some:

tourist sitting beach shacks

Bali

The most attractive of the Indonesian cities, Bali is suffering at the hands of tourism in an ironical manner. The city is losing its authenticity, experiencing environmental degradation, sanitation issues, over-crowded destinations, water scarcity and expensive housing; but also dependant on tourism and was terribly hit with economic losses during the Covid-19 pandemic when the government put restrictions on international travel. Bali has changed with the introduction of nightclubs, bars and pizza joints of Kuta, golf courses more resembling French Rivierra or Cancun and more and more outside influence. The Balinese heritage is getting lost in appeasement of foreigners, and it is best not to visit it while the city reclaims stronger, sustainable income sources other than tourism.

Hawaii

A simple Internet search on Hawaii will directly take you to its pristine waters and lovely beaches, while the Native residents suffer at the hands of the tourism industry and travellers disrespectful to the Hawaiian culture and space. At present, Native Hawaiians comprise less than 10% population of the island. Since the last century, there has been a continuous development of housing and hotels. It is possible that the next generation will not be able to buy their own lands as the prices are driving people out of their homes they have lived in for centuries. A rebuilding of eco-friendly tourism industry from community perspective has been emphasised upon, as a result of the 1993 hurricane Iwa. Hawaii has even been called the “extinction capital of the world” for the amount of species that have gone extinct or are at the risk of it. The tourism sector is mostly foreign owned, and it is better to let the island recover from the environmental and cultural exploitation before flying into it.

st marks square

Venice

Venezia, Italy, or popularly known by its English name, Venice, is sinking. Built on more than 100 small islands, its rich architecture does not have proper foundations. Though the people are acquainted with flooding and have proper systems for disaster warnings, the frequency of the floods have increased over the years. The Venetian residents have started leaving the city as tourists continue to visit and consume its resources. The recycling facilities, sewerage, transport and accommodation are under pressure. The number of tourists far outnumber the original population of the place. Locals are suffering with high living costs, overcrowded transport systems and poor environment, driving them out of there. For the prevention of Venice turning into a living museum with no actual residents, tourists must limit themselves to other forms of exploring it, like books and audio-visual media.

Machu Pichu, Santorini, Blue Lagoon, Himachal Pradesh and many more places are in the same condition: a compromised environment with locals bearing the brunt of over-tourism. In that case, eco-friendly tourism must consciously exclude such destinations to help them recover and flourish.

Located 20 minutes from Goa Dabolim International Airport, Alila Diwa Goa is a five-star lifestyle resort that has minimised its environmental impact by using primarily local materials and working with the landscape to preserve indigenous ecosystems. The aesthetic scheme provided by the resort reflects these efforts by blending it effortlessly and gracefully into its natural setting. Use of the region’s eco- friendly brick red laterite stone can be seen throughout the hotel.

Nature plays an integral part of its architecture, with large courtyards and majestic old trees encircling the property. The trees strategically integrate into the spatial design, with the spaces woven around the large trees in a symbiotic relationship. The beautiful landscape merges seamlessly with the existing plants and maintains the existing vegetation. The lively greenery adds an appealing look to the soothing surroundings.

The award-winning home-style coastal restaurant ‘The Spice Studio’, which is an award-winning home-style coastal restaurant was undertaken as a restoration project for heritage conservation. The interiors of the restaurant are embellished with vintage and pre-loved furniture that have been restored to preserve authenticity. The decor is inspired by the antiquity of Goan homes.

Contemporary fusion

The resort boasts one of the most beautiful infinity pools that overlooks the lush green paddy fields. It offers 153 elegantly designed rooms and suites, multiple dining venues, club & teen zone, a mini theatre, spa and a fitness centre. A combination of contemporary Goan architecture with the mojo of cultural richness.

Vaishali Bali, PR and marketing manager, Alila Diwa Goa, shares, “The sourcing is done through different vendors because as part of sustainability initiative we try to work a lot with the local farmers and source directly from them as much as possible.”

There are different kinds of activities the resort provides to its guests under the tagline of Alila Experiences. “We have an activity called Alila Masterclass where our guests can directly interact with our chefs, can step into the kitchen and can learn how to cook a Goan dish. We also offer options to our guests to choose what they like to learn in a restaurant. We also have a similar Masterclass for the kids, where we organise activities for the kids where they can interact with the chefs and learn how to make pizza and several other things.”

Alila Diwa partners with several experience providers and one of them is BLive, which organises e-bike village tours for guests to explore the village and interact with the natives.

Alila Diwa Goa not only focuses on crafting rare and intimate experiences for its guests but also takes certain steps by being responsible to the planet and tourism. “We are now proud to be the first hotel in Goa to install an automated water bottling plant at the property in partnership with the ‘WaterCube.’ This being a ‘Zero Mile Water’ program will help us to eradicate over 350,000 single-use plastic bottles annually, reduce over 50 tons of carbon emissions and deliver fresh alkaline water to our guests in sterilised and sealed glass bottles,” informs Vaishali.

Officially welcoming guests this fall, is a secret getaway to the Himalayas – Amaya. For the thoughtful traveller, mindful of the fragility of the Himalayas linked to climate change and human pressure, pristine Amaya with its small footprint and an undertaking to restore and preserve its 25 acre private forest is revolutionary for India. The word Amaya has its origins in Sanskrit and means ‘simplicity’. The resort’s minimalist yet elegant appeal is at the heart of every thoughtfully designed structure and curated experience.

Amaya chalet

An impressive vision of respect and responsibility towards materials, people and the environment are visible in Amaya’s landscape and design. Deepak Gupta, founder of Amaya, shares, “I had always envisioned building a sustainable sanctuary in the Himalayas where one could escape to slow down and enjoy the beauty of the mountains and their crisp clean air. Amaya is the result of this yearning and a 7-year journey of discovery, innovation and collaboration. It is also proof that a habitat can be traditional and contemporary, a modern mountain village of sorts which embraces nature and its glorious beauty instead of displacing it.”

Bijoy Jain is the principal architect for Amaya, the founder of globally renowned Studio Mumbai. He and his team studied the forested site over multiple visits and minimally used a section of its panoramic terraces, once farmed generations ago, to nestle a set of unique villas seamlessly into the hillside. Deepening and reviving a connection to this pastoral heritage, each eco-sensitive modern structure created was built meticulously by hand using local materials – wood, lime, and stone. They provide guests a rich cultural landscape that deepens their sense of place while offering a quiet haven to reconnect with loved ones and even more, with themselves. Amaya comprises an interesting combination of chalets, suites and villas. Each of the five villas has a study or artist studio, dining and living spaces, a fully equipped kitchen and three independent ensuite bedrooms that centre around wrap-around porches that hug each structure and the angled terraces.

With much private space to purposefully get lost in, the heart of the communal experience is at the top of the private ridge that includes the restaurant and dining area, aesthetically designed Finnish saunas for adults, a gorgeous library and a jaw dropping, teardrop shaped swimming pool that perfectly satisfies one’s longing for rest and relaxation on a vacation. With Amaya’s commitment to minimise the carbon footprint and reforest much of the remaining terraces, expect impeccable service and inspired haute cuisine at the elegantly styled, panoramic farm to table restaurant. Amaya has associated with celebrated Chef Prateek Sadhu and his team to push boundaries with bright and innovative flavours centred around seasonal and regional produce. Travellers to Amaya can also enjoy a range of curated experiences, a heritage walk to the adjacent Darwa village, private meals on secluded mountain top, local produce foraging and horticulture tours, riverside picnics and mountain treks.

Amaya cuisine

The resort is located just under two hours from Chandigarh airport which is easily accessible from all major cities in the country. The low traffic, pastoral road over rolling hills is a charming, scenic 64 km drive with forest cover that shades your car windows as the urban world recedes and you decompress and relax deeply. A restorative sojourn awaits guests who seek endless experiences to explore from design to cuisine, nature to culture, and beyond.

For the thoughtful traveller, mindful of the fragility of the Himalayas linked to climate change and human pressure, pristine Amaya with its small footprint and an undertaking to restore and preserve its 25-acre private forest is revolutionary for India. The word Amaya has its origins in Sanskrit and means ‘simplicity’. The resort’s minimalist yet elegant appeal is at the heart of every thoughtfully designed structure and curated experience.

The chief architect for Amaya is Bijoy Jain, who also founded the famed Studio Mumbai. He and his team made several trips to the woodland site to study it, and they only used a small portion of the panoramic terraces that were previously farmed years ago to tuck a collection of distinctive houses into the hillside. Each eco-sensitive modern building was painstakingly constructed by hand using materials found nearby, including wood, lime, and stone, strengthening and renewing a link to this pastoral legacy. At Amaya, development has been kept to a minimum and areas have been designed with consideration for the site’s ecosystem.

Amaya comprises an interesting combination of chalets, suites and villas. Each of the five villas has a study or artist studio, dining and living spaces, a fully equipped kitchen and three independent ensuite bedrooms that centre around wrap-around porches that hug each structure and the angled terraces. Depending on how modern-day discerning travellers like to stay while on vacation, there is a choice of nine one-bedroom chalets and six suites comprising a bedroom and a study. The interiors of Amaya have been curated by Viewport Studio, London and reflect the concept of sustainable minimalism and Nordic design. The finishes and interiors lend a contemporary aesthetic to the spaces and the furniture, carpets, lighting and fittings have been thoughtfully created utilising the expertise of international designers, plus local weavers and fabricators.

Seasonal produce and local ingredients are at the forefront of the unique culinary experience at Amaya. With Amaya’s commitment to minimise its carbon footprint and to reforest much of the remaining terraces, expect impeccable service and inspired haute cuisine at the elegantly styled, panoramic farm-to-table restaurant. Amaya has teamed up with celebrated Chef Prateek Sadhu to push boundaries with bright and innovative flavours centred around seasonal and regional produce. In walking up to the restaurant on meandering hand-laid-out stone cobblestone walkways, you see expert horticulturalists nurture kitchen and herb gardens lush with organic fruits and vegetables.

Bedroom with a bed and window

With much private space to purposefully get lost in, the heart of the communal experience is at the top of the private ridge that includes the restaurant and dining area, aesthetically designed Finnish saunas for adults, a gorgeous library and a jaw-dropping, teardrop-shaped, naturally filtered, heated swimming pool that perfectly satisfies one’s longing for rest and relaxation on a vacation. Travellers to Amaya can enjoy a range of curated experiences, a heritage walk to the adjacent Darwa village, private meals on secluded mountain tops, local produce foraging and horticulture tours, riverside picnics and mountain treks.

Amaya is located just under two hours from Chandigarh airport which is easily accessible from all major cities in the country. The low-traffic, pastoral road over rolling hills is a charming, scenic 64 km drive with forest cover that shades your car windows as the urban world recedes and you decompress and relax deeply. A restorative sojourn awaits guests who seek endless experiences to explore from design to cuisine, nature to culture, and beyond.
