Can you imagine climbing up to 8000 feet above sea level for some tea? Hundreds of travellers do that each day to reach Kolukkumalai Tea Estate for the top-notch organic tea it produces, apart from the picturesque beauty it offers.
The mountains, the smell of tea, and the way to reach Kolukkumalai Tea Estate is sure to be etched into one’s memory forever. Located in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu, it is the highest tea estate in the world and has been running since early 20thth century – a long, old story. Kolukkumalai Tea Estate is spread over an area of 81 hectares that was put to full use by the British, who had envisioned a great tea industry here since the year 1920. They were assisted by the Chettiar brothers from Bodinayakkanur in Theni, who went ahead to run the estate from 1935-1971.
The factories and buildings were entirely built up by using pony path and head load. The estate has more than 150 workers and it has one Head Office at Bodinayakkanur, Theni District, Tamilnadu.
