Biofase is a Mexican based non-food bioplastic resin that does not use any kind of food sources like corn or potato as raw materials. Worldwide over 80% of bioplastics are made from food sources that can be fed and might witness scarcity in the coming years. Biofase has created a unique way to make eco-friendly disposable cutlery from avocado pits, which is an agro-waste. These pits are used as the raw material to make sustainable and biodegradable forks, spoons, straws and knives. It is the first ever company to manufacture plastic from agro-industrial waste.
The discovery of Biofase
The company’s CEO Scott Munguia discovered that avocado pits contain a biopolymer that is similar to the one in corn. The products have undergone many experiments and tests and are well researched and developed. Moreover, the technology is patented.
The cutlery products contain 60% of avocado biopolymer and the rest 40% contains synthetic organic compounds. The cutlery and straws require 240 days to naturally induce decomposition in the soil. Biofase’s products almost reduce 60% pollution from the environment.
Along with cutlery and straws, Biofase also makes bio-based containers, compostable clamshells, and compostable plates. These products can replace polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene and are stronger than common plastic cutlery and straws. They are excellent for both hot and cold food and don’t bend or lose their properties compared to traditional plastic cutlery.
Award winning
Biofase is both FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved and BPA free. It has both SGS and TUV Austria certifications.
The company has received five national awards and two internationals. The technology has been taken to Sweden, Madrid, Chicago and Bilbao. Biofase currently export products to United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Luxembourg, Honduras, Poland, Holland, Peru, Sweden, Belgium and many more countries.
