A more natural way of protecting crops: The extract of Licorice Leaves

The organic industry has been striving to find ways to make organic farming more accessible. This means more organic food, which can only be produced if there are enough ways to ensure that the organic farms are unharmed and are provided with enough help and equipment.

If we go to a more traditional method of farming, pesticides are a more prominent way of protecting crops during farming seasons. They have advantages in more ways than one. They can help in killing harmful insects and organisms, resulting in the growth of more crops and vegetation. This way, farmers can get more productive and not suffer losses which means the farmers also get to provide food that is beneficial for humans in their day-to-day diet. This includes fruits and vegetables, grains, milk, and other foods which have important nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, and proteins. Additionally, since pesticides help in the increased harvest, it leads to increased export revenues. And with no infections or diseases in the crops, there is a reduction in the waste of the harvest, land, water, time, and money. This makes it useful usually in developing countries.

But in recent years, they have proven to be harmful not only to the environment but also to the factors involved in agriculture. This is why it has become important for the organic industry to find a way of protecting the harvest that is not detrimental to the environment.

Copper is a naturally occurring pesticide that has been used widely. In fact, Organic farming currently utilizes mainly copper-based products for disease control, while in integrated farming synthetic chemicals are also allowed.

But it is not exactly a non-toxic option. When pesticides are sprayed on the crops and vegetation, there are residues left on them which then are carried into the houses of the people buying the same vegetation. This can cause a direct consumption of those residues of pesticides and can cause irritation to the skin and eyes of humans especially. Besides this, the same pesticides can be a hazard to the environment too as they can contaminate the water and soil and even the animals. They are meant to kill harmful insects and germs but in turn, they also attack non-target organisms too. This means valuable soil microorganisms and insects, fish, birds, and other wildlife are in danger when we use traditional pesticides.

Large scale spraying of pesticides by machines

So finding solutions like organic products can reduce the use of those pesticides and help in finding more eco-friendly methods. And the organic industry excels in that.

According to research, the extract of Licorice Leaf has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties, similar to what normal pesticides have. In fact, Licorice is one of the most popular medicinal plants. It belongs to the family Fabaceae. With the extract of this leaf, it can avoid any sort of infection to the crops and works well as a pesticide.

And additionally, this is a much safer option than copper as this doesn’t have the side effects on human life copper does. The infections mostly found in crop plants can also be avoided by using Crude Licorice Leaf Material. This can help in increased harvests and also provide good quality crops.

With this in mind, there is still not enough research about sustainable agriculture products, as the use of synthetic pesticides is still rampant. It is already established that synthetic pesticides are harmful to the environment, so there is a need to look for more natural pesticides like Licorice Leaf Extract.
