Tetra pak pioneers sustainable packaging with certified recycled polymers in India

In a significant step towards sustainability, Tetra Pak has become the first company in India’s food and beverage packaging industry to introduce carton packaging materials incorporating certified recycled polymers. This initiative places Tetra Pak ahead of the regulatory curve, with the new mandate under the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2022, set to take effect in April 2025.

Tetra Pak’s innovative packaging now integrates 5% certified recycled polymers, demonstrating its commitment to reducing reliance on fossil-based materials and advancing circularity in the industry. The packaging materials are produced at the company’s International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS)-certified facility in Pune, ensuring adherence to globally recognised sustainability standards.

By launching this initiative well ahead of regulatory requirements, Tetra Pak is reinforcing its leadership in sustainable packaging solutions. The move aligns with the company’s broader vision of ensuring all its packaging materials are made from renewable or recycled polymers.

Cassio Simões, Managing Director of Tetra Pak South Asia, highlighted the importance of industry-wide collaboration in achieving sustainability goals. “This is an opportunity for the food and beverage industry to collaborate and transition toward more circular solutions. Our goal is to ensure all our packaging is made from renewable or recycled polymers, reducing reliance on fossil feedstock,” he stated.tetra

The use of recycled polymers in packaging not only helps in reducing environmental impact but also fosters a circular economy by increasing demand for recycled content. This shift supports India’s growing recycling infrastructure and aligns with global sustainability trends that promote the responsible use of materials.

Tetra Pak’s early adoption of certified recycled polymers sets a precedent for the industry, encouraging other companies to accelerate their sustainability initiatives. With rising consumer awareness and regulatory pressures, sustainable packaging solutions are becoming a necessity rather than a choice.

As the industry moves towards greater environmental responsibility, Tetra Pak’s initiative exemplifies proactive corporate leadership in fostering sustainable practices. By prioritising recycled content and ensuring stringent sustainability certifications, the company is paving the way for a greener future in the food and beverage packaging sector.
