The fashion industry has long been scrutinised for its environmental footprint, from resource-heavy production processes to non-biodegradable waste. However, EcoLine, a Tamil Nadu-based company, has set out to rewrite this narrative. Founded by the father-son duo of K Sankar and Senthil, EcoLine combines innovation, sustainability, and style to redefine what it means to be fashionable. Their journey from recycling PET bottles to creating high-quality, sustainable clothing has been nothing short of inspiring.
The genesis of EcoLine
India generates an astonishing 9.3 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, equivalent to 7.75 lakh tonnes every day. The sheer scale of this issue inspired K Sankar and his son Senthil to take action. Leveraging their expertise in polymer recycling, they established Shree Renga Polymers, a company dedicated to recycling PET bottles. Building on this foundation, they launched EcoLine, a clothing brand committed to upcycling plastic waste into affordable and stylish garments.
Their mission was clear: tackle the dual challenges of plastic waste and unsustainable fashion practices by merging environmental responsibility with accessible style.
EcoLine’s innovative approach to sustainable fashion begins with the collection and sorting of PET bottles. Through a vast network of 50,000 ragpickers spread across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry, discarded bottles are gathered and meticulously sorted to remove caps, wrappers, and contaminants.
The five-step transformation process
- Crushing and Flaking: The cleaned bottles are crushed into small flakes, measuring three to eight millimetres in size. This step simplifies further processing.
- Melting and Spinning: The flakes are melted at 300°C and stretched into polyester fibre, which is then cooled and transformed into yarn.
- Fabric Weaving: The yarn is woven into fabric, laying the foundation for clothing items such as T-shirts, jackets, and blazers.
- Waterless Dyeing: A hallmark of EcoLine’s process, dope dye technology infuses colour directly into polyester fibres during production, eliminating the need for traditional water-intensive dyeing.
- Designing and Tailoring: The fabric is tailored into stylish, high-quality garments, with each product ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 6,000.
The result? It takes just six PET bottles to make a T-shirt, 20 bottles for a jacket, and 30 for a blazer. Their sustainable clothing line is not only eco-friendly but also stylish and practical.
Innovations that set EcoLine apart
EcoLine’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the use of recycled materials. The company embraces cutting-edge technologies to minimise environmental impact:
- Waterless Dyeing: By using dope dye technology, EcoLine saves trillions of gallons of water annually.
- Zero-Waste Philosophy: The sludge from PET bottle cleaning is converted into bricks, and food waste is transformed into organic fertilisers for cultivating organic cotton. This holistic approach ensures that every by-product is put to good use.
- Hybrid Fabrics: EcoLine blends organic cotton with recycled polyester fibres, resulting in durable, sustainable, and affordable materials.
For Sankar and Senthil, the inspiration to start EcoLine stemmed from their deep concern for the environment and a desire to create impactful solutions. They recognised the urgent need to address plastic waste and saw an opportunity to integrate sustainability into fashion. Their goal was not just to recycle but to upcycle — turning waste into products of higher value.
Their efforts received widespread acclaim when Prime Minister Narendra Modi donned an EcoLine sadri jacket made from 25 recycled PET bottles during a parliamentary session. This milestone marked a turning point for EcoLine, as the brand’s innovative work gained national and international recognition.
EcoLine’s impact is both environmental and economic. By recycling over 15 lakh PET bottles daily, the company significantly reduces plastic waste that would otherwise end up in landfills or oceans. Additionally, their products contribute to water conservation and reduce the use of harmful chemicals in textile production.
With an annual revenue of Rs 12 crore, EcoLine has established a loyal customer base across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Their affordable pricing strategy ensures that sustainable fashion is accessible to a wider audience.
A vision for the future
EcoLine’s aspirations extend far beyond their current operations. Situated in Tamil Nadu, the company plans to expand its reach globally, addressing the issue of inappropriate PET waste disposal on a larger scale. Their commitment to sustainability and innovation positions them as leaders in the fight against plastic pollution.
EcoLine is more than just a clothing brand; it is a movement towards a sustainable future. By combining cutting-edge technology with a zero-waste philosophy, K Sankar and Senthil have created a model that proves sustainable fashion doesn’t have to be expensive or exclusive. Their journey serves as an inspiration to individuals and businesses alike, showcasing the power of innovation and determination in addressing some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
EcoLine is a testament to the fact that fashion can be both stylish and sustainable, proving that even waste can be transformed into something extraordinary.
