Dr Disha Dinakar: Women driven organic enterprise

Digvijaya Herbals, a 100% natural and organic beauty brand aims to revolutionise the way beauty organic products are consumed in the India market. The brand offers an innovative range of skincare, haircare, health, and wellness products that are made with naturally sourced ingredients and formulations.

Family-owned & operated, Digvijaya Herbals was founded in 2019 by Dr Disha Dinakar, based on values that resonate with her parents, M N Dinakar & Mrs Vijaya Dinakar. Dr. Disha who’s currently pursuing a fellowship in Aesthetic Medicine from the University of Greifswald Germany is already a prominent figure in the South Indian film industry.

Speaking about the vision and inspiration behind setting up Digvijaya Herbals, Dr Disha says, “My mother and I are strong believers in organic products and their benefits. We both read every label before we purchase out of curiosity. Indian market is vast with a wide range of beauty & health products. Most of them seem aesthetically pleasing but sadly enough the labels have harmful chemical names mentioned in some corners with too much love for authenticity, Digvijaya was born.”

She adds, “My father has spent 3 decades in the Middle East. He is an entrepreneur himself and he’s also the chairman of Digvijaya group. I was born and raised in Oman and I moved to India to pursue my studies. My mother and father have been my pillars of strength and have extended their immense support due to which I’m able to juggle between my practice and business. My mother is the Managing Director of the firm. She has been the mastermind behind Digvijaya.”

Wearing many hats

Interestingly as Dr Disha points out, Digvijaya Herbals is a women-driven enterprise.Dr Disha shares, “We are opening an 85,000 sq feet unit within 3 months which will hire many more women to support the brand.”

Explaining the challenges faced in the initial years and managing both her company, her studies and her movie career, Dr Disha elucidates, “Well, nothing has changed. I believe life has to be colourful and there shouldn’t be any scope for regret of not accomplishing what you’ve intended to do in this lifetime. I’ve been a multitasker always, I just grabbed the opportunities that came my way. During college, I won Miss Mangalore and took up a few advertisement assignments and movies. But at present, I’m unable to manage time for the same and had to turn down offers as I’m doing a fellowship in aesthetic medicine, given that I’m a nationally approved doctor for seafarers. At present, I’ve dedicated 16 hours a day to my practice, and my firm as we all know, nothing comes easy. There were a lot of challenges faced but I was all ready for it. It doesn’t go down well with society when a woman is being independent and is working towards her goals. But at the end of the day what matters is your choice along with your family’s consent. As I’ve mentioned my parents have been my best friends and have supported me in every step that I’ve taken. The journey so far has been like a rollercoaster with a lot of ups and downs, but I’ve enjoyed every moment of it.”

Digvijaya Herbals uses cold-pressed carrier oils and essential oils that are unprocessed and sourced from outside India, especially from the Middle East.. The organic products are formulated by a panel of doctors who work relentlessly to deliver products infused with natural extracts straight from the source for maximum potency. Most of the herbs and extracts are sourced from Digvijaya’s own farm.Cleanse Deap Sea Mud Mask

Dr Disha informs, “Most of the products are manufactured at our Digvijaya unit with the utmost care and hygiene as we don’t use preservatives for most of the products – they are prepared against orders.”

Organic is the new buzz

Sharing her insights on the herbal/ organic product market in India and how Covid 19 has changed the scenario, Dr Disha explains, “India’s organic products market is vast. There is a high potential for the same in this country. As a matter of fact, not only India, the global organic market is booming. Covid 19 certainly did cause a hit in between but now the public awareness is more. Everybody is on the lookout for choosing the right kind of products for boosting immunity & health. Organic beauty products have already been on top for quite some time.”

The company’s products are sold on its website and on social media platforms. The brand directly reaches out to customers and the mode of shipment is through air freight, cargo etc. Apart from the domestic market, the company has shipped to 43 countries covering the Middle East, Europe, Far East, America & Australia.

As for future plans, Dr Disha says, “Our vision is to develop many unique organic beauty and wellness products that will be useful to everybody irrespective of age or gender. We have already opened up distribution outlets in Singapore and Sri Lanka. Very soon we are going to open in the Middle East as well. It would be a dream to see Digvijaya reach the 100 cr milestone soon.”
