Dr. Ashok S Alur, Director, Centre of Excellence for Farmer Producer Organisations, (DOH-UHS-B, Government of Karnataka) speaks to Steena Joy on the challenges facing the FPOs in India, the government’s role and lessons to learn from Sikkim’s organic story.
Are FPOs showing interest to transition to Organic farming?
Yes, farmers are realising the importance of healthy soils. A lot of awareness is being generated among the members of FPOs. Individually a lot of farmers are fascinated about organic means of farming. The Central and State Governments are supporting organic farming through different schemes and programs. To my knowledge and experience with FPOs, the FPOs are not averse to transitioning to organic farming. Few of the FPOs in Karnataka are already showing inclination towards organic farming. Since the distribution of organic farming practicing farmers is sparse it will take few more years for FPOs to move towards organic farming practices.
What role can the government play in growing the FPO community? Roadmap to reaching the 10,000 FPOs Target?
Under the Formation and Promotion of 10,000 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) Scheme, Government of India has carved a strategic roadmap and is facilitating the formation and promotion of FPOs through the Implementing Agencies (IAs) across different states…
Dr. Ashok S Alur continues giving his insightful opinions on Indian FPOs and more.
