In Mizoram, owing to the hilly terrain, the mobility of farmers is restricted. To support these farmers who are forced to sell their produce at a much lower price, Clover Organic has set up an Organic Farmer Resource Center or Farmer’s Organic Store in Aizawl where farmers are encouraged to sell directly to the end consumers.
If a farmer is unable to visit the outlet, provisions will be made to transport the produce to the centre on a regular basis. Sanjay Aggarwal, Founder & CEO, Clover Organic said, “To observe eco friendly norms, we are using banana leaf packaging. Waste/spoilt produce will be converted to compost and used as manure later.”
The entire cost of running the resource centre will be borne by team Clover. Awareness about the centre is being promoted in local newspapers, radio, TV etc to ensure that more and more farmers utilise the facility and sell at the prevailing market price.
Efforts are underway to loop in the local FPO – Aizawl District Organic Spices Producer’s Society and train them to operate the store independently. “At a later date, we intend to multiply these shops and handhold FPOs to run them,” added Aggarwal.
