In a world increasingly aware of its ecological footprint, innovative businesses are striving to create a more sustainable future. Earth Tatva, a pioneering enterprise in the realm of ceramic production, is a shining example of how an idea born out of an epiphany can evolve into a commercial venture that aims to make a lasting impact on both people and the planet.
The founding story of Earth Tatva
Earth Tatva’s story began with a simple yet powerful moment of realisation. The company’s founder, Shashank Nimkar, was a student at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, when he visited a major ceramic production hub in India. As he walked through the streets, he was struck by the heaps of production rejects that were carelessly discarded by the roadside. This image, though distressing, sparked an epiphany in Shashank’s mind. He realised that the ceramics industry was contributing massively to waste, and something needed to be done to turn this linear production process into a circular one.
Rather than accepting the wastefulness of the industry, Shashank decided to take action. What started as a self-initiated graduation project quickly grew into a full-fledged mission to recycle ceramic waste and make it a valuable raw material for future production cycles. Shashank’s vision was clear: to transform ceramic production into a process that could be reused indefinitely, eliminating the need for new raw materials and minimising waste.
The beginnings of Earth Tatva
In the early stages, Shashank tested various material compositions and production methods. The journey wasn’t easy—there were numerous challenges and experiments, but each failure only brought him closer to the solution. Thanks to the support of institutions like NID and various other studios that provided resources, infrastructure, and expertise, Shashank was able to co-create what is now known as TatvaMix—a material made from recycled ceramics.
TatvaMix is a game-changer in the ceramics industry. By using natural binders, the material is transformed into a mono-material that can be recycled again and again, making it possible for the production process to be truly circular. This innovation not only reduces waste but also creates an eco-friendly material that can be used in a variety of products, from household items to architectural elements.
Earth Tatva’s first prototype was made using 70% recycled content. It was well received by potential users, institutions, and brands, who were eager to learn more about the product and explore possible collaborations. The company presented its prototypes at pop-up stalls, where they received invaluable feedback from customers who were excited about the possibility of using recycled ceramics in their homes and businesses. The overwhelming response led to widespread coverage in digital publications, which helped Earth Tatva gain recognition far and wide.
Despite being a student project, the potential for Earth Tatva’s innovation was clear. Shashank’s dedication and the support of the community led to the company receiving government and private grants that helped turn this once-small project into a commercial venture.
The mission and impact of Earth Tatva
At its core, Earth Tatva’s mission is to make ceramic production more sustainable by reducing the vast amounts of waste generated by the industry. According to archaeological research, ceramics can remain unweathered for centuries, highlighting the long-term environmental impact of production waste. In India alone, one ceramic production cluster uses approximately 7.2 lakh tons of clay annually, with 21,600 tons of fired pieces discarded each year. Over the course of 50 years, this waste could fill the equivalent of an 18-storey building the size of a football field.
Earth Tatva plays a vital role in tackling this issue. By rethinking the way ceramics are made and focusing on recycling and reusing, the company is leading the charge towards a circular economy. Rather than relying on harmful materials like cement or resin, Earth Tatva uses natural binders to create a mono-material that can be recycled indefinitely. This innovation ensures that ceramic waste does not end up in landfills but is instead repurposed for future use, reducing the industry’s overall carbon footprint.
The Earth Tatva team: A collective effort
Shashank Nimkar may have founded Earth Tatva, but it is the collective effort of the entire team that has brought the company to where it is today. The team is composed of skilled interns such as Manikanta and Ganesh, who possess a strong knowledge of ceramics and a deep commitment to environmental sustainability. Both are committed to improving the company’s products and processes, constantly striving for excellence. Their enthusiasm and dedication are crucial to Earth Tatva’s ongoing success.
The design and production efforts are led by Sakshi Nahar, the company’s Design & Production Manager. Sakshi is a cheerful and environmentally conscious designer who ensures that Earth Tatva’s products not only make a positive impact on the planet but are also beautifully designed and functional. With her keen eye for detail and her deep understanding of ceramics, Sakshi plays a vital role in ensuring the company’s products meet the highest standards.
At the helm is Shashank Nimkar, the Founder and CEO of Earth Tatva. A maker at heart, Shashank continues to drive the company’s vision forward, exploring new materials and collaborating with experts to create sustainable solutions. His journey began with a simple graduation project, but his passion for sustainability and innovation has led to the creation of a company that is redefining the way ceramics are produced and consumed.
Looking to the future
Earth Tatva’s journey is still unfolding, but the company has already made a significant impact in the ceramics industry. Their products, made from recycled ceramics, are not just environmentally friendly; they are also high-quality, durable, and aesthetically pleasing. Earth Tatva invites consumers to be part of the change by using their recycled ceramic wares, thus contributing to a greener, more sustainable future.
The company’s mission is to continue developing innovative, circular solutions that reduce waste and promote sustainability. With its talented team, strong support from the community, and unwavering commitment to its goals, Earth Tatva is poised to make an even bigger impact in the years to come.
Earth Tatva’s journey from a student project to a thriving business is a testament to the power of innovation and sustainability. What started as a vision to reduce waste in the ceramics industry has blossomed into a company with a mission to make the world a greener place, one recycled ceramic at a time. With their dedication, hard work, and passion for environmental sustainability, Earth Tatva is leading the charge towards a circular economy, and we can only expect greater things from them in the future.
