Organic farming has taken precedence over conventional farming in recent years. Rising environmental consciousness has prompted consumers to abandon mainstream foods in favour of greener alternatives.
Factoring in this trend, governments worldwide are providing impetus to organic farming techniques in order to preserve soil fertility and water degradation. On the back of this, the global organic fertiliser market is experiencing an immense upsurge and will continue doing so across the next half-a-decade.
Organic fertilisers have greatly helped consumers avail access to clean-label foods, to the extent that they are willing to pay a premium price for such products. Leading manufacturers are thus investing heavily in bolstering their research and development capabilities to develop out environmentally friendly fertilisers.
Founded in 2015 by Yakub Ali, CMS Organics has been supplying organic fertilisers to companies across India. He says, “Our organic fertilisers are widely outsourced to several companies for use in their products to enhance their organic products’ nutritional values. We are supplying in bulk to other companies under our licence issued by the Karnataka Agriculture Department; we have not yet launched our products under our own brand. In future, we are planning to make our products available under our own brand directly to farmers.”
The company manufactures Organic Manure & Other Bio-Fertilisers. CMS Organics has recently developed a revolutionary product – Potash derived from Molasses which can be used as alternative to Potassium Fertilisers.
Potash from agro waste
Yakub says, “The new concept of deriving Potash (K2O) from agro waste like molasses produces natural potash, which can even be called organic. There is no chemical contamination and we can get K2O up to 25% and 100% water soluble. We have successfully replaced traditional chemical potash in the past 5 years. We now need to spread awareness about product. Only few companies like CIL, IFCO, RCF etc have introduced this product earlier. Now we want to increase availability of this eco friendly potash in the Indian market. We are already supplying this potash to many small scale and large industries.”
There are only a few large suppliers of potash fertilisers globally as potash mineral reserves are available only in certain regions. As India does not have potash reserves, she imports her potash requirement of 2.5 – 3.5 million tonnes per annum. “India’s potash consumption accounts for only 5to 7% of the global demand for potash, which provides it with moderate bargaining power. We hope one day this organic potash will play an important role in our organic farming sector. If promoted well, India will be able to produce nearly 200 metric tonnes of this Potash daily,” pointed out Yakub.
The company’s USP is that it has a range of unique products which can act as natural pesticide as well as growth promoter to plants, available for both soil application and drip application. CMS Organics can produce it in liquid, powder and granular forms.
Yakub adds, “Basically we use only natural waste like agro based industry wastes and animal wastes. But in case of Organic Potash – we use molasses based waste to manufacture/derive potash. It is very rich in nutrients and helps plants in obtaining all the types of nutrients they need.”
Economical and nutrient rich
He points out that the Potash derived from Molasses is an alternate to the existing potash fertilisers at a much more economical rate. This fertiliser plays a major role in both the vegetative growth phase of plants as well as in the productive phase. These nutrients are suitable for all types of crops. Naturally available POTASH K-10 (upto 20%) has almost all major and micronutrients are available. It improves the shining, flavour, proper size of the crop. It also increases the resistance in plants against diseases and increases the number of flowers. It also helps in plant growth like increasing root length and number of roots and for timely maturity.
CMS Organics has branches across India in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand. Yakub has plans to expand the company’s footprint to other states. He has been in talks with companies in Africa and the USA. “We are working on the licensing and other procedures. Hopefully we will launch our overseas branch by 2022,” he says.
