Maurya FPC: Trial by Fire

Left to its own resources, this FPC has braved the blocks and charted its own course with little or no help from the government after it launched its FPO scheme.

Farmer Producer Organisations in India were initiated to give the farmers here a push towards upliftment, enabling them to get a fair price for their produce and increase farm incomes. However, there is a need to facilitate our farmers with access to improved technology, credit, better input and more market linkages to incentivise them to produce better quality produce.

Here’s where the FPO comes in. Aggregation of small, marginal and landless farmers into FPOs will help enhance economic strength & market linkages of farmers for enhancing their income. Keeping this in mind, Government of India launched a new Central Sector Scheme titled “Formation and Promotion of 10,000 Farmer Produce Organisations (FPOs)” with a clear strategy and committed resources to form and promote 10,000 new FPOs in the country with budgetary provision of Rs. 6865 crore.

This was a huge future forward step to initiate considerable changes in the agri-economy, but unfortunately as time progressed, the initial energy started floundering.

Many FPOs stopped getting the necessary help from the government, forcing them to fend for themselves. One of them, Maurya Farmer Producer Company Limited, a Farmer Producer Company (FPC) started in 2015, has faced many challenges. But the good part is that the trial by fire has made them entirely self-reliant….
