What happens when two committed vegans and eco- conscious individuals come together? In the case of SochGreen, life partners Priyanka and Pranav Jain translated their eco-consciousness into an extensive range of reusable organic menstrual hygiene products or RUMPs. A pioneering force in sustainable menstrual solutions since 2017, the brand is committed to environment protection. “We specialise in crafting reusable period products designed for comfort, efficacy, and eco- friendliness. Our diverse product range includes Menstrual Cups, Cloth Pads, Organic Everyday Undies, Period Panties, Incontinence Panties, Labia Pads, Stain-Free Period Undies and Discharge/Hygiene Undies,” informs Roshni Magar, a member of the SochGreen team.
She adds, “With a global footprint, we proudly export our high-quality products to several countries. We extend our impact beyond commerce by collaborating with NGOs and women-led organisations, providing them with affordable, export-grade products.” With a drive to empower communities through educational sessions in schools and colleges, the team takes an effort to enlighten people about the adverse effects of disposable sanitary napkins and advocate the switch to sustainable alternatives.
What did it take?
The vision and inspiration behind starting SochGreen stemmed from a combination of factors, including a desire to address environmental concerns, promote women’s health and well-being, and foster social impact. Environmental consciousness is one of the first motivators for the brand’s inception.
Roshni elaborates, “The founders were deeply concerned about the environmental impact of disposable menstrual products, including the immense amount of waste they generate and their contribution to pollution and resource depletion. Creating reusable and eco-friendly alternatives has been a way to mitigate these environmental issues.” The founders saw the health-related issues with disposable menstrual products as well, which “often contain chemicals and additives that can be harmful to both the body and the environment.”
Priyanka and Pranav also looked at the socio-economic scope of RUMPs, making them easily accessible to all, especially underserved communities. With a growing global interest in eco- friendly and sustainable products, including menstrual solutions. SochGreen has identified an opportunity to fill a gap in the market by offering high-quality, reusable alternatives to traditional disposable products.
Tackling Hurdles
“Overall, the vision behind starting SochGreen is creating a business that not only provides eco-friendly menstrual products but also fosters positive social change by promoting women’s health, empowerment, and environmental sustainability,” says Roshni. However, creating awareness and education about the business and its offerings was not easy. Roshni talks about the challenges that the team faced initially, “One of the primary hurdles has been raising awareness about the environmental and health impacts of disposable menstrual products and educating consumers about the benefits of reusable alternatives. Overcoming this challenge involved investing in marketing and educational campaigns to reach target audiences and change perceptions.”
Another Herculean task was developing high-quality menstrual products that are comfortable, effective, and durable. It required an extensive research, testing, and collaboration with manufacturers. Roshni tells about the other hurdles that needed to be crossed to become a profitable business, “SochGreen faced competition from both traditional disposable menstrual product manufacturers and other sustainable menstrual brands in the market. Standing out in a crowded market requires innovative product offerings, effective branding and marketing strategies, and a commitment to quality and sustainability.” To ensure widespread availability and sale of the products, the team invested in distribution networks, partnerships with retailers, and outreach programs to reach underserved communities.
