Where it all began
The soul of Bob’s Red Mill lies in the shared journey of Bob and Charlee Moore. Their story began with a blind date in 1952, but it was Charlee’s vision that quietly set the foundation for everything that followed. Determined to create a healthier life for her family, she turned to whole grains and natural foods long before they became mainstream.

Charlee was not just a source of inspiration; she was an active force in the early days of the business. From hand-packaging products to working in the original store, she played many roles, helping transform a household belief into a growing enterprise. Bob himself often recalled the unforgettable aroma of the first whole-grain loaf Charlee baked on their small farm in the 1960s—a moment that symbolised the power and beauty of real food.

A seed takes root
In 1968, while managing an automotive centre in California, Bob Moore stumbled upon a book in a public library that would change his life. John Goffe’s Mill told the story of a man who revived an old mill and returned to traditional flour-making. The idea struck a deep chord with Bob, igniting a vision that aligned perfectly with his belief in whole grains and better nutrition.

What followed was years of research, persistence and dedication. Bob immersed himself in the ancient craft of stone milling, searching for authentic equipment at a time when most traditional mills had become museum pieces. His determination paid off when he sourced quartz millstones from an old mill in North Carolina.

From a quonset hut to a flour mill
In 1974, Bob, Charlee and two of their sons opened Moores’ Flour Mill in a modest Quonset hut in Redding, California. It was a humble beginning, but one built on knowledge, craftsmanship and conviction. A few years later, Bob and Charlee stepped back, passing the mill on to their sons and moving to Oregon.

Fate, however, had other plans. During a walk in Milwaukie, they discovered an old feed mill for sale. With faith and careful consideration, they decided to begin again. In 1978, Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods opened its doors, capturing public attention almost immediately. This time, Bob was not starting from scratch—he was starting with purpose.

People before profit
From day one, Bob and Charlee placed people at the centre of everything they did. Their mission was never solely about growth or revenue; it was about feeding people well, respecting farmers, and creating a workplace rooted in dignity and care.
