Mette and Stig: Beauty without harm

Being a parent can be challenging. Taking responsibility of the well-being of children who start out knowing nothing about what is good and what is bad for them, keeping them healthy and happy, always choosing the best products to fill your home with- the list keeps going on. Due to intense, fast-paced technological advancement, every object around us is being manufactured using easily available chemicals that takes minimum time and resources. While they are more accessible, the pose significant health risk when utilised in excess. Cleaning products, clothes, skincare, and even hair care, heavily loaded with chemicals, come in contact with your body and may cause many health problems. Mette Lykkegaard and Stig Bundgaard were also parents concerned about the well-being of their four children. In an attempt to keep them safe and healthy, the couple became the creators of Natulique, an organic beauty company focusing on hair styling and hair care.

Love for family to love for customers

About their inspiration, they say, “We had always been very aware of the potential health risks from exposure to chemicals commonly found in our everyday environment, such as cosmetics, and tried our best to exclude those from our lives. However, our new-born twin girls developed allergies very early on and became very sensitive to chemicals. We, therefore, had to be even more careful with all kinds of soaps, shampoos and body washes, but it was not an easy task. At the time, organic products and the organic lifestyle hardly existed in the beauty industry.” Yet, it is impossible for parents to give up on the well-being of their precious little beings. So, they decided to create their own company. They believed they “had to develop better and more trustworthy products. All the people we met during our journey expressed the same frustration and were very happy to find that someone was doing something about it.”

Thus, a passionate lawyer, Mette, partnered with her husband Stig, an economics major, to form a hair care company that cared about its people. Mette, having diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age of 28, feels strongly about the exclusion of “toxic chemicals and radiation” from people’s lives to reduce the risk of such diseases. With a belief that efficient products can be clean and safe too, the creators opine that “Each and every one of us carries a responsibility towards the environment. With this as our leading principle, we integrate sustainability from the ingredient procurement to the final product.”

However, Natulique is not limited to the products; Mette and Stig extend their connection to the people who know hair products best- hair stylists. The have recognised the importance of exclusive, non-diverted, high quality, socially conscious, people to contribute in developing the businesses and careers for their clients: the “Professional Hair Artists.”

Sustainability in salons

Natulique Concept Salon was the next big move by the team. Salons that want to be organic and sustainable and organic can be exclusively Natulique; as the product range has grown immensely since its conception in 1988. It can take care of cleaning, colouring, and protective treatments. The venture encourages salons to connect with them to expand the sustainable, holistic hair care movement. In addition to that, they are proud to do their bit against Animal Cruelty, and extend their support towards initiatives like Hope for Justice, One Tree Planted, Breast Cancer Awareness and Christmas Aid.
