Ved Jhunjhunwala: If your plate could tell a story, it would say CHUK!

Let’s be honest—how often do we really think about the plates we eat from? Most of us are more focused on what’s on the plate than the plate itself. But what if your plate could tell a story? One about dusty roads, old trees turned offices, village women learning machines, and the earth getting a little cleaner with every meal you eat.

Welcome to CHUK—India’s leading compostable tableware brand made from sugarcane waste, and a quiet revolution that’s been decades in the making.

Where it all begins: Under a tree, quite literally

The story doesn’t start in a fancy boardroom or a slick startup office. It begins in 1981, when KK Jhunjhunwala, an entrepreneur with more dreams than resources, decided to set up a paper business called Pakka Limited. No shiny furniture, no big investors—his office was the ground under a tree, and his startup fund came from his wife’s wedding jewellery. That kind of grit? You can’t buy it.Compostable tableware

Fast forward a bit, and we meet young Ved Jhunjhunwala, KK’s son. At just seven years old, Ved started his first business: a snack stall just outside the factory gates. He was shut down in a day—for coercive selling, no less. Clearly, the entrepreneurial spirit was inherited early.

From kraft paper to bigger purpose

For years, the family business did well making kraft paper. You’ve probably held their work without realising—ripping open sugar sachets at Café Coffee Day, or unwrapping a McDonald’s burger? That was them.

But success wasn’t enough. They started making choices most companies wouldn’t—like setting up a rice husk-powered energy plant in 1995 so they wouldn’t rely on fossil fuels. Or installing expensive chemical-recovery systems just to sleep better at night, even though no one was asking them to.

It was clear: this was a business built on values, not just valuation.

By 2009, Ved had done it all—machine operator, night shift worker, salesman, and now, Managing Director. But one day, after years of growing the packaging business, it hit him: he was part of the problem.

Plastic waste wasn’t just a statistic—it was everywhere. On the ground. In the water. In the bellies of cows. And in that instant, Ved realised things couldn’t go on the same way.Compostable tableware

So began a deep dive into research. Between 2010 and 2014, the team worked with global institutions to figure out how to do packaging better—cleaner. More natural. Compostable.

Enter CHUK: The brand with a big heart and tough tableware

In 2014, CHUK was born. The mission? Simple: make strong, good-looking tableware out of bagasse—the fibrous residue left after sugarcane is crushed. Stuff that was once burned as waste? Now transformed into plates, bowls, trays, and containers that are microwave-friendly, freezer-safe, leak-proof, and completely compostable.

By 2017, CHUK launched officially—and it wasn’t just about machines and products. It was about people. Half the workforce in the new plant were village women, many of them specially-abled. That’s not a diversity clause on a website—that’s real empowerment.

And here’s the magic part: after your meal, you can just toss your CHUK product into the compost bin, and let Mother Nature work her wonders. No guilt. No garbage mountain.

But wait—CHUK isn’t just eco-friendly. It’s circular.

While the world is only now waking up to terms like “circular economy”, CHUK has been living it for over 30 years.

Everything they make starts with agri-residue—waste that was once polluting the air when burned. It’s pulped into usable form and turned into sturdy, stylish disposables. And it’s all done in-house—CHUK is the only brand in the world that controls the full pulp-to-product process.

This means you get consistent quality, reliable supply, and a product that’s traceable from the farm to your fork.

What keeps them going?

You might think a company like this is driven by numbers. But no—CHUK is powered by people.

They believe that everyday work should make life better for the team, the community, and the planet. That’s why there’s no hierarchy, just self-organised teams. They hire from disadvantaged backgrounds, support children’s education, and yes they even joke about helping old ladies cross roads and kissing babies. (Ved, if you’re reading this—blush away.)

Their mindset is refreshingly honest. Are they perfect? Nope. But they’re trying. And that matters more than ever.Compostable tableware

Why it all matters

CHUK isn’t just about replacing plastic plates. It’s about rethinking how we consume, how we dispose, and how we live.

Because every time you pick CHUK over plastic, you’re saying yes to:

  • Less landfill waste
  • Cleaner air
  • Empowered women
  • Smarter energy
  • Real change

You’re choosing to support a business that doesn’t just talk green—but acts green, every single day.

And now? They’re just getting started.

From a tree-shade office to being India’s top compostable tableware brand, CHUK has come a long way. But this isn’t the end—it’s only the beginning.

They’ve still got challenges ahead, from scaling compostable innovation to educating people on why bagasse beats plastic every time. But with their roots deep and vision clear, CHUK isn’t slowing down.

So the next time you’re at a party, a restaurant, or grabbing takeaway—look down at your plate. If it says CHUK, you’re part of a bigger story. One about the Earth, entrepreneurship, and choosing better—even when it’s harder.

And if it doesn’t say CHUK? Maybe it should.
