A single use bag that dissolves in hot water?

We all know that hot water can dissolve salt, sugar and other particles. However, have you heard of a single use bag that can be dissolved in hot water within minutes?

Meet this eco-friendly replacement to single-use plastic bags that serves the same purpose but without polluting landfills or being toxic.

Cassava Bags Australia, a startup based in Sydney has launched the world’s first completely biodegradable single-use bag and liner range, which is aimed to eradicate single-use plastic from the planet.  These revolutionary non-toxic items are completely plastic-free, will not degrade into microplastics, and will never leave a plastic footprint on the Planet.

Chun Lau, Bruce Delarossi and Telusa Mapapalangi, three millennials and business colleagues with a passion for the great outdoors, are the brains behind the newly launched brand.

An Australian solution

Single use plastic bags take the top spot on the list of environmental villains. They are inexpensive and readily available, making it difficult to quit; not only are they harmful to humans, but they also pose a threat to wildlife when they become litter, resulting in ingestion and entanglement.

Since the majority of the world’s population uses single-use plastic bags, the solution should also be a collective one. Cassava Bags Australia was founded on this belief. The brand’s notion is that individual people’s small efforts, taken together, have the potential to transform the world.

Cassava Bags is dedicated to supporting bold ideas that can help stop the flow of global plastic pollution and pave the way for new solutions. While cleaning up the mess is extremely important, and grassroots initiatives play an important role, it is critical to use the power of innovation to confront the problem head on.

The company is on a mission to become the global solution for businesses to eliminate all single-use plastic bags by manufacturing 100 per cent biodegradable products produced with all natural and harmless materials.

So, what are cassava bags?

Designed for a single use , these bags are non-toxic, polylactic acid (PLA) free, and bisphenol (BPA) free.

The main component in the production of these bags is cassava, a starchy root vegetable with a wide range of uses. The company’s sophisticated technology extracts this material and combines it with organic components to create a biodegradable film.

Glycerin, a colourless, odourless liquid commonly found in skincare items such as soaps, moisturisers, and cough syrups, is one of the natural ingredients utilised in the production of these bags. The others include food-safe colouring as the base colour of the bags, and minute amounts of Polyvinyl Alcohol, a nontoxic and water-soluble synthetic polymer, is also included.

Cassava bags take three minutes to dissolve in hot water and biodegrade within six months in soil. In the ocean, the products dissolve in a matter of days.

The products are manufactured to degrade in a number of environments, including: Landfills, Home Composting, Commercial Composting or buried in the dirt or in contact with it. The products are also ocean friendly and safe for marine life.

When stored in a warehouse, on store shelves, or in homes or offices, these bags however, will not decompose. startup also has aprons, trash liners, Mail Out Bags, Pet Waste Bags, and Toilet Seat Sanitation Covers under production.

In the short term, the company envisions to ensure that its products are available nationwide, in places like retailers, hotels, and hospitals, to mention a few. The long-term plan?  To enter the global market.
