FabBRICK: Turning textile waste into building blocks

The fashion and textile industry is one of the most polluting sectors in the world, generating mountains of waste every year. Across Europe alone, millions of tonnes of discarded fabrics end up either incinerated, buried in landfills, or shipped overseas where their disposal contributes to severe environmental problems. Against this backdrop, one French start-up has chosen a different path—FabBRICK, founded by architect Clarisse Merlet, is proving that textile waste can be reborn as a resource for the future.

Tackling textile waste with a circular mindset

The traditional model of textile waste management relies heavily on export, effectively shifting the problem elsewhere. This not only increases carbon emissions through transport but also places the environmental burden on countries already struggling with waste management. FabBRICK disrupts this cycle by keeping textile waste in Europe and reprocessing it into durable, useful products.

This approach exemplifies the principles of a circular economy—where resources are continually reused, repurposed, and given extended life cycles. Instead of allowing fabrics to end up as pollutants, FabBRICK transforms them into a material that has both practical and creative applications. By doing so, it prevents tonnes of textile waste from being discarded, reduces dependency on virgin raw materials, and lowers the overall environmental footprint of construction and design industries.

A sustainable alternative to conventional materials

Beyond diverting waste from landfills, FabBRICK ofFabBRICK textile waste bricksfers an eco-friendly replacement for resource-intensive materials. Traditional bricks and building elements often rely on processes that consume large amounts of energy and raw materials, while also generating emissions. FabBRICK, in contrast, uses discarded textiles as its base, binding them into solid, functional forms with minimal energy consumption.

The result is a lightweight, insulating, and acoustic material that can be applied in interiors for wall panels, furniture, or decorative features. By merging sustainability with practicality, FabBRICK proves that eco-conscious choices do not have to come at the expense of performance or beauty.

The idea was born in October 2016, when Clarisse Merlet began exploring how textiles, often seen as worthless waste, could be given a second life. Her first prototype demonstrated that fabric fibres, when restructured, could form strong and versatile building blocks. This early innovation marked the beginning of FabBRICK’s journey.

Two years later, in December 2018, the company was officially created, securing patents in France and Europe to protect its unique process. Today, FabBRICK operates from Paris’s 19th arrondissement, where a small but dedicated team continues to refine production while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability at every stage.

Environmental benefits at every stage

FabBRICK’s work creates value across the sustainability spectrum:

  • Waste reduction: By upcycling fabrics, the company prevents textile waste from being dumped or burned.
  • Carbon savings: Avoiding exports and reusing existing materials reduces emissions linked to both disposal and new material extraction.
  • Resource conservation: Every brick produced avoids the need for fresh raw materials, conserving energy, water, and natural resources.
  • Healthier interiors: The bricks provide natural acoustic insulation without relying on synthetic, chemical-heavy alternatives.

Each creation represents a tangible step toward a more sustainable building industry, where design and construction minimise harm and maximise resource efficiency.FabBRICK textile waste bricks

Craftsmanship meets responsibility

While FabBRICK’s handmade bricks are celebrated for their beauty, their greatest achievement lies in their environmental message. They challenge industries to rethink waste not as a by-product but as a starting point for innovation. The meticulous craftsmanship behind each piece reflects a philosophy of respect—for the material, for the environment, and for the story embedded in every fibre.

For architects and designers, FabBRICK is not only a material but also a way to align creative practice with ecological responsibility. By choosing it, they participate in a system that champions sustainability while offering their clients spaces enriched with meaning and originality.

FabBRICK’s journey has only just begun, yet its vision is clear. In a world where construction materials are under increasing scrutiny for their environmental cost, the company provides a real-world solution that combines creativity, functionality, and sustainability.

Its work illustrates a powerful truth: waste does not have to signal the end of a material’s life. Instead, with ingenuity, it can become the foundation for something valuable, beautiful, and environmentally responsible.

FabBRICK stands as a reminder that the path to sustainability is not only about cutting down but also about reimagining—seeing potential where others see loss, and crafting a greener future one brick at a time.
