Nubra Ecolodge is a family run ecotourism venture, located near Sumur sand dunes in the Nubra Valley. The landscape facing the confluence of Shyok and Nubra rivers is the natural habitat for seabuckthorn, wild flowers and desert wildlife. The 11 acre farm with a family home, has been planted with poplar, willow, apricot and apple trees, along with vegetable gardens. It commands a 360 degree view of the Karakoram mountains, the sand dunes and the Nubra river.
A large open deck facing the valley near the vegetable garden is used as a lounge or for dining in fair weather. Ideal location to go for long walks along the Sumur sand dunes and the Nubra river. A minimum two days stay is recommended to enjoy the Nubra experience.
Nubra Valley
The Shyok River meets the Nubra River to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges. This 10,000 ft (3048 m) high altitude cold desert with rare precipitation and scant vegetation except along river beds and villages, which are irrigated and fertile, producing wheat, barley, peas, mustard and apples, walnuts, apricots and almond trees. The valley extends up to Turtuk to the north west and Siachen Glacier to the north east with the Sasser and Karakoram Pass connecting Nubra with Xinjiang, forming the old silk route.

Nubra Eco Lodge is run by a local Ladakhi family, who have worked on this arid landscape for years to make it a liveable farm. In the summer it has an organic vegetable garden and a small green house for the winter. The Eco Lodge also has its own wheat and barley fields grown nearby and a few cows and dzos – (a cross between a cow and a yak). Guests can enjoy freshly baked Khambir (local Ladakhi whole wheat bread or sour dough) and the fresh milk and vegetables from the garden. Home cooked local Ladakhi and Indian cuisine with a fixed menu will be served.
Things to Note
The weather and landscape of Ladakh is very unpredictable and during the change of seasons there may be sand storms, which can be quite scary. Advice to tourists travelling to Ladakh is to be always prepared for the unexpected, this is a high altitude cold desert and the mild weather can change anytime. One day acclimatisation in Leh is required before crossing Khardung La.
Remember this is not a resort or a hotel, this ecotourism venture by Good Earth is intended to give tourists a feel of the local Ladakhi way of life and hospitality while giving an additional income to family and staff, helping the local economy.
Nubra is not connected to the electricity grid, it only gets diesel generated power between 7 and 11pm. Only BSNL mobile network will work in Nubra. For Indian Nationals, Inner Line Permits are required to travel to Nubra. You can apply online here http://www.lahdclehpermit.in/contactfl.php print and submit with ID at the Tourism office in Leh (opposite J&K Bank, Main market) All foreign nationals will need a Protected Area Permit to visit Nubra. Please contact a local travel agent in Leh and get them the day your arrive in Leh. Please share the information that Nubra Ecolodge is in Sumur with your local driver/ guide.
