Bambu Indah is a radically distinctive boutique bamboo hotel in Ubud, carefully curated by designers and long term residents of Bali, John and Cynthia Hardy.
It was in 1975 when John moved to Bali. He then met Cynthia, and together they set out on a mission to build a jewellery business. Upon finding success, their passions soon led them to create the sustainable masterpiece that is Bambu Indah.
In 2005, eleven antique Javanese bridal homes were brought to Bali, restored, and decorated with the finest details. Since then, they have expanded the property to the riverside, where the couple is pioneering a sustainable future with innovative, bespoke and luxurious bamboo structures for a truly one a kind experience. Now, Bambu Indah bamboo hotel is available to travellers from around the world seeking unique experiences while being comforted by the luxury of a natural environment and service of an intimate hotel.
Some of the houses named differently are:
Guadua House
Guadua House, taking its name from the grove of Colombian bamboo that nestles it, is an ode to open air living and tuning in. Featuring a private yoga space and a meditation pod, and a cinnamon tree growing through the house. It is an invitation to self inquiry and full immersion in the Balinese jungle, soothed by the soft rumbling sounds of the Ayung river. Sleep beneath a towering roof canopy in a bed enclosed in the comfort of a cascading princess net. Step into a hand-hammered copper basin under a rain shower to refresh. Enjoy your private pool overlooking a permaculture garden, and experience living in a house made entirely of bamboo and cooper.
Afrika House
The most luxurious of our Javanese bridal houses is Afrika House, characterized by impressive interior space and design. The furnishings were selected from the private collection of John and Cynthia, who travelled extensively with their family throughout Africa. The bathroom features a ‘rain shower’, and a spectacular copper bathtub designed and made by John Hardy. You can lie back in steaming spring water while looking over the stunning Sayan Valley.
Afrika House faces the famous Sunset Deck, giving you front row seats for perhaps the most beautiful evening spot in Ubud, with the breathtaking view over the rice fields.
Copper House
Copper House is nestled high in the trees overlooking the Ayung River. Open on one side yet intimately secluded, Copper House is open to the elements but your bed is protected in an air-conditioned mosquito net. Turn off the lights and soak into the warm copper bathtub for moon bathing and rendezvous with the fireflies.
Padi House
Padi (‘Rice Field’) House is as regal Javanese joglo with a sweeping view of the Sayan Valley and delicious organic permaculture gardens of Bambu Indah. You will be comforted by the sound of running water wrapping around your house feeding our natural swimming pool on your doorstep.
The interior design is authentic and eclectic. John and Cynthia have selected some of the most unique treasures from their travel to decorate Padi House – lavish rugs from Morocco, batik fabrics from Indonesia, lacquerware from Burma, and Javanese antique beautiful furnishings.
Gladak House
Gladak House is the new addition to the Hardy’s family of antique Javanese houses. Built more than 100 years ago, it now sits overlooking the Sayan ridge, and offers the most pristine and untouched view of the entire property. The expansive deck in the bamboo hotel is a private invitation to relaxation and diving into the beauty of Balinese nature. Observe the farmers work in the rice fields in the morning, enjoy the outdoor bathroom, and appreciate the delicate interior design treasures collected from around the world over the last twenty years.
Kolam House
Kolam (‘Pond’) House is private and secluded in its own walled garden with a balé to rest in and stepping stones over the pond to your front door. Built over a lush and verdant pond, full of fish, water hyacinth and lilies, Kolam House is ideal for long stays as it has its own entry gate into the garden, multiple outside dining areas, and a wraparound wooden porch. The generous bathroom has an exquisite open-air shower that surrounds you with jungle flora while you wash in spring water.
Some other Houses include Kuda House, Biru (blue) House, Kuning House, Jawa Lama House, Elora & Orin House (named after the Hardy’s children)
