Kerala’s dhows to make official presence at Qatar World Cup, 2022

Kerala, which has a massive amount of football crazy fans, is all set for the upcoming football world cup, which is going to be held after four years of waiting. However, this time 1000 miniature dhows crafted by Kozhikode’s Beypore artisans, the ones who construct real dhows, have been sent to Qatar as merchandise to be displayed in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022

Kerela's Dhaw Cruise

Kerala Tourism tweeted that these beautiful pieces of art, with the FIFA ensignage, are meant to be gifts. However, they are also available in the online platform and offline. Moreover, the life-sized dhow will be on display at the traditional dhow festival in Qatar.

Moreover, the families involved in dhow-making in Beypore have been seen engaged in the craft since generations. It is believed to be a centuries-old skill that Kerala craftspersons learned from the Arab traders. Kozhikode district tourism promotion council (DTPC) secretary Nikhi Das informed that the department has recognised the potential of the dhow-making village to be developed as a tourism spot and encourages package trips. He mentioned that they are trying to get a geographical indication (GI) tag for Beypore’s dhows and have submitted a draft application.

The Beypore’s luxury handcrafted dhows are popular among the Qataris. The royal family of Qatar first commissioned a dhow from the village in 2011. And, since the business has been picked up and the craftspersons dispatch at least one dhow to Qatar every single year. Similar to the dhows that arrived in Kerala by the Arab traders. These boats are made of Nilambur teak and are tied together with complex use of traditional coir ropes and the ropes are, however, being strengthened by applying marine oil.

Qatar cruises

Dhows are eco-friendly

Dhows are traditional sailing vessels with lateen rigging. Commonly seen in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean region. Dhows are trading vessels and primarily used to carry heavy items such as fresh water, fruits, and heavy merchandise.

The dhows were made by the fishing community for sailing purposes during their fishing escapades, however they are now being utilised as a source of income and tourist attraction. As tourists and travellers are seeking for more sustainable and eco-friendly travel options, Dhow cruises are best suited as they are one of the most substantial options.

Dhow cruises are eco-friendly. Unlike other cruises, they do not produce any emissions. They receive power from the wind. However, dhow cruises are now turned out to be a great option especially for those who are looking for an eco-friendly way to explore.
