Nestled in the serene hills of Mukteshwar, Uttarakhand, surrounded by the majestic Himalayas, lies a tranquil sanctuary known as Bir Terraces. This is no ordinary homestay — it is a deeply personal and purpose-driven retreat, born from one man’s yearning for peace, built with love by his family, and sustained by a commitment to nature, sustainability, and conscious living.
The roots: A father’s dream
The story of Bir Terraces begins with Maha’Bir’ Prasad Vashisht, a man who longed to escape the noise and pollution of the city and reconnect with the stillness of nature. His dream was both humble and meaningful — to create a haven for rest, reflection, and renewal. He imagined a home amidst the mountains, free of chaos, where one could hike, farm, and create joyful spaces — like a candy shop for children in the local village — with his wife by his side.
His son, Architect Praveen Vashisht, who had spent over three decades building homes in the mountains, took this dream to heart. Leaving behind his established professional life, he committed himself to turning his father’s vision into a living, breathing reality. Alongside his wife, Meeta Vashisht, Praveen began building not just a home, but a haven that embodied warmth, authenticity, and mindful living.
Sadly, during the foundational phase of the project, Maha’Bir’ Vashisht passed away after a brave battle with cancer. Though he did not live to see the completion of Bir Terraces, his spirit remains the cornerstone of everything it stands for.
At Bir Terraces, sustainability, community, and hospitality are not just ideals — they are woven into every aspect of daily life and guest experience. From the architecture to the food, from water management to waste practices, every detail is steeped in responsibility and care for the environment and those who live within it.
The team at Bir Terraces follows biodynamic farming — a holistic agricultural practice that treats the farm as a self-sustaining ecosystem. All fertilisers and pest-control methods are prepared in-house using natural plant materials found in the surrounding forests. This chemical-free approach nourishes the soil, supports local biodiversity, and fosters a deep connection between people and the land.
Conscious water management
Water conservation is a top priority. A rainwater harvesting system with a capacity of up to 65,000 litres helps store water for drier months, while a grey water system collects, filters, and repurposes water from sinks, showers, and washing machines for irrigation. These systems reduce strain on the local water supply and promote responsible usage in an area where resources must be cherished.
Waste is managed with precision and conscience. Through aerobic composting, organic waste is turned into nutrient-rich compost for farming. Dry waste is disposed of responsibly, and all guests are encouraged to reduce their footprint — a shared effort towards a cleaner, greener future.
Nature-friendly toiletries
Since grey water irrigates the crops, the toiletries provided are natural, paraben-free, and sulfate-free. Crafted on-site, these skincare products are gentle on both the body and the environment — a perfect example of Bir Terraces’ commitment to sustainability without compromising on comfort.
The kitchen at Bir Terraces offers a primarily vegetarian menu, aside from eggs, as a conscious choice that respects the essential role animals play in maintaining ecological balance. This conscious dietary choice reflects the homestay’s core values — offering nourishment that respects life and the planet.
A culture of warmth and connection
True to the spirit of Uttarakhandi hospitality, Bir Terraces is not just a place to stay — it is a place to belong. The small but passionate team, lovingly called the Bir Family, ensures every guest is treated like one of their own. Whether you’re sipping chai by the fire or walking with the resident dogs and cats through terraced gardens, there’s a comforting sense of home here — one that stays with you long after you’ve left.
Creating and maintaining an eco-homestay in the remote terrain of Mukteshwar has not been without its challenges. From unreliable water supply and infrastructure gaps to the emotional weight of building in memory of a lost loved one, the journey has tested the family’s strength and resilience. But every obstacle has only deepened their commitment — to their land, their values, and their guests.
An inspiration for conscious tourism
In a world increasingly defined by commercial tourism, Bir Terraces stands out as a model of conscious, regenerative travel. Every guest who visits becomes part of a larger ecosystem — supporting sustainable farming, ethical hospitality, and mindful community engagement.
It is a living example of how tourism can heal rather than harm, enrich rather than exploit. Here, the mountains are not backdrops for selfies — they are sacred teachers. The silence is not emptiness — it is presence. And the experience is not just relaxing — it is restorative.
Bir Terraces is more than a retreat. It is a living legacy — of a father’s quiet dream, a family’s labour of love, and a vision for a more sustainable world. In every rainwater tank, compost pile, and handmade bar of soap lies a philosophy that believes in giving back more than one takes.
So, if you’re looking for a destination that doesn’t just offer beautiful views but also meaningful experiences, Bir Terraces in Mukteshwar, Uttarakhand, welcomes you with open arms and an open heart.
Because here, home is not just where the heart is — it’s where the earth is respected, and life is celebrated.
