Raison D’Etre: A sanctuary of sustainable living amidst nature’s bounty
Tucked away between the bustling towns of Kullu and Manali, Raison D’Etre emerges as a unique riverside retreat offering not just comfort but also a deep connection to nature. This homestay is an extraordinary blend of luxury, sustainability, and an unyielding respect for the environment. Behind this eco-conscious marvel are Shalini and Nitin Beri, whose inspiring journey and unwavering vision have transformed this one-acre property into a haven of tranquillity and ecological harmony.
The Visionaries
Shalini and Nitin Beri, the heart and soul of Raison D’Etre, hail from Kullu, where their love for the Himalayas and nature began. After college, life took them to metropolitan hubs like Mumbai and Delhi, where they built successful careers in advertising. However, the bustling urban life left them yearning for simplicity, peace, and purpose.
Their decision to return to the mountains was driven by a desire to lead a life intertwined with nature. “We wanted to build something that reflected our love for the environment and allowed us to share this beauty with others,” Shalini recalls. Thus, Raison D’Etre was born—a place designed not only to provide an unparalleled guest experience but also to tread lightly on the planet.
Their efforts to create a space that merges comfort with environmental consciousness have resulted in a retreat that reflects their passion for sustainable living.
Sustainable design at its core
Raison D’Etre is a shining example of sustainable tourism. Every corner of the property is thoughtfully curated to minimise its environmental footprint while celebrating the natural beauty of the region.
- Harnessing the artesian spring
The property’s unique feature is its artesian spring, a source of crystal-clear, mineral-rich water. This spring not only provides drinking water but also feeds the infinity pool overlooking the Beās River. Its abundant supply is used for various purposes, ensuring a closed-loop system that reduces reliance on external resources. - Renewable energy initiatives
Solar panels installed across the property generate energy, supplementing its power needs. The reliance on renewable energy highlights the Beris’ commitment to reducing carbon emissions. - Geothermal heating for sustainability
The homestay employs geothermal heating, where the natural warmth from the earth is used to keep the rooms cosy during harsh winters. This innovative approach eliminates the need for energy-intensive heating solutions. - Plastic-free operations
To address the growing menace of plastic waste, the Beris have eliminated single-use plastics. Refillable dispensers for toiletries and reusable packaging are used, ensuring that luxury does not come at the expense of the environment. - Farm-to-table philosophy
The property’s orchard, which boasts a variety of fruits such as plums, peaches, and kiwis, supplies much of the produce used in the kitchen. Herbs and vegetables grown on-site are also a staple in the meals served, reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation while offering guests the freshest farm-to-table experience.
The guest accommodation at Raison D’Etre mirrors the property’s ethos of thoughtful design and sustainable luxury. Spread across 40,000 square feet, the property includes just four ensuite bedrooms, ensuring ample privacy and exclusivity for its visitors. Each room is a masterpiece, blending modern comforts with vintage charm, featuring antiques collected from various parts of India and locally crafted furniture.
Art enthusiasts will appreciate the original paintings, ceramic works, and numbered prints that adorn the walls, many of which were created by friends of the Beris. The rooms are designed to maximise natural light and airflow, creating spaces that are as practical as they are beautiful.
Gastronomy Rooted in Tradition and Creativity
Shalini oversees the culinary aspects, creating meals that are a delightful mix of local and global flavours. Seasonal ingredients from their orchard are transformed into dishes inspired by Indian, Asian, and European cuisines. Guests may find themselves savouring traditional Himachali siddu one day and a European dessert the next, with every bite reflecting the freshness of the local produce.
Guests at Raison D’Etre can immerse themselves in nature through activities such as meditating by the private riverfront, lounging in hammocks, or enjoying the infinity pool during the summer and monsoon seasons. The property’s proximity to the river Beās offers an unparalleled experience of tranquillity amidst the symphony of flowing water and chirping birds.
Through Raison D’Etre, Shalini and Nitin have not only built a retreat but a legacy that embodies their love for the environment. Their journey serves as an inspiration for those seeking to escape the urban grind and reconnect with nature.
As visitors leave this sanctuary, they carry with them not just memories of breathtaking landscapes but also an appreciation for the thoughtful blend of sustainability and luxury that defines Raison D’Etre. It stands as a testament to the Beris’ vision of creating a space where life, nature, and hospitality intertwine effortlessly, leaving an indelible mark on all who visit.
