Water is the most important beverage on the planet and Avanti Mehta, India’s youngest water sommelier is urging consumers to rethink the value of this precious resource. The globally renowned institute, FineWater Academy, founded by the world’s most famous water sommeliers – Martin Riese and Michael Mascha, certified Avanti. Having mastered the skills of tasting, evaluating and educating others about water, Avanti represents the next generation spotlighting the unique experiences associated with natural mineral water and its importance for eco-friendly wellness.
Natural Mineral Water is bottled from a real, protected source that has terroir, much like wine. Water sommeliers can detect and differentiate between types of natural mineral waters, their quality and minerality. With this expertise, Avanti is able to curate unique experiences with food and other spirits, “Natural mineral water does have a unique taste and provides an epicurean experience when paired right. For example mineral waters with higher natural sodium content pair brilliantly with dark chocolate and lend an umami flavour. For cocktails, low minerality waters give a smooth finish while mid-to-high minerality adds a touch of zing” says India’s Youngest Certified Water Sommelier.
While fine-dining water menus are quite popular in Italy and America, in India the words “mineral water” are synonymous with packaged drinking or purified RO water which ironically has no minerals in it. “Our bodies are 60% water, yet we pay so much attention to what we eat and not what we drink. Drinking water is a major part of our diet. Natural mineral water contains naturally occurring minerals and electrolytes, which lend a unique taste and are integral to wellness. RO removes all these healthy minerals and the purification process itself causes 75% water rejection. While natural mineral water is bottled as drawn and needs no purification and causes zero water rejection. As a water sommelier, I want people to realise the difference so they can make better, more sustainable choices for their wellbeing and the planet’s,” she says.
