Discourse on climate and films : ALT EFF

ALT EFF wrapped up with its pan-India film screenings yesterday. Did you make it to one of them?

This year’s was the 4th edition of All Living Things Environmental Film Festival. Taking place in the various zones of India as well as internationally, ALT EFF was a “meditation on community, change and co-existence.” The festival showcased a thoughtfully curated set of film program for the screenings, the selection for which was open to all via the All Living Things website. In the middle of animated and student films, short and long format films, fiction, and documentary, musical performances and discussions with environmentalists, artists, and filmmakers also took place in the venues. Amongst the exhaustive list of selected films for the festival were “Kohora River”, “Wild Hope: Coffee for Water”, “Between The Rains”, “Terra Matter” et al. “No Water No Village”, “Feeling The Apocalypse”, “The Egret River”, are some of the winners of ALT EFF 2023.

Roots of the festival

ALT EFF is a platform launched in 2020 in Panchgani, Maharashtra, founded by four minds during the time of nationwide lockdown in India. It inspires climate awareness and action at scale through the power of cinema. The festival increases awareness and empathy to inspire climate action locally and at large. ALT EFF aims to “engage the public on the environment and social issues” of this ottime through an “informed, creative and experiential discourse.” It has enabled talented filmmakers from around the world to be introduced to a global audience who are as interested in listening to a story as they are to tell. With plenty of global flair and an Indian flavour, ALT EFF curates the best of environmental films every year and cultivates audiences across borders, linguistics and classes of the society.

The All Living Things Environmental Film Festival (ALT EFF) debuted with its decentralised approach in 2022 as it travelled pan India enabling in-person screenings, panel discussions, film-maker Q&A’s and much more. Some of the films showcased at the festival included “All That Breathes” by Shaunak Sen, “The Keepers of Corn” by Gustavo Vazquez, “Colonies in Conflict” by Rajani Mani and “The Seeds of Vandana Shiva” by Camilla Becket, among others. With film at its core, the festival creates spaces and experiences by facilitating environmental dialogue, debate and participation both online (free and pay-as-you-feel model) and in-person events.

The team behind the film festival comprises of impactful individuals who, along with leading their careers in different fields, have come together collect the stories of the members of climate-conscious community. Throughout the year, the ALT EFF team showcases write-ups, news articles, and other artworks by various people, making sure that the zeal for climate action does not come to a halt in between the film screenings.

Virtual screening of the 62 selected films is available on the ALT EFF website till 20th December.
