Indosole: Crafting footwear that leaves a lighter footprint

In a world increasingly burdened by waste, one innovative company has found a way to turn environmental concern into stylish, sustainable footwear. Indosole, founded with a simple yet transformative idea, has been redefining the concept of responsible shoes for over 15 years.

The origins: Inspiration from the everyday

The journey began with an ordinary pair of sandals made from tyre soles. Between 2004 and 2010, the founders of Indosole recognised a pressing global problem: billions of tyres are discarded annually, clogging landfills, polluting rivers, and releasing toxic fumes when burned. In tropical regions, these tyres become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, contributing to diseases such as malaria, dengue, and Zika.

Inspired by Bali’s rich artistic heritage and the potential of repurposing waste, Indosole set out to create footwear that was not only comfortable and stylish but also had a positive environmental impact.

Evolution through collaboration

From 2010 to 2019, Indosole honed its craft through collaboration with Indonesia’s skilled artisans. Each year brought improvements in technique and design, gradually transforming the humble recycled tyre sandal into a globally recognised product.Indosole sustainable footwear

By 2017, the growing demand for Indosole shoes highlighted challenges in scaling production while maintaining financial viability. This prompted a re-evaluation of processes, culminating in a breakthrough: the company’s SETT (Sole Engineered Tyre Technology) allowed them to utilise 100% of a tyre in the creation of “The Perfect Sandal.” The ESSNTLS line, launched in 2018, showcased this innovation, marrying comfort, durability, and sustainability.

The global pandemic posed new hurdles, particularly in Bali, where operations were halted for nearly two years. Indosole responded not by pausing its mission but by supporting grassroots programmes and feeding the hungry. This period of resilience strengthened the company’s commitment to its staff and its mission. In 2024, Indosole introduced the Easy Living Series—affordable, comfortable sandals featuring the highest recycled content of any footwear in the world.

Every year, approximately 1.5 billion tyres are discarded worldwide. Their decomposition takes centuries, and many end up being burned, releasing harmful oils and fumes. Indosole’s approach offers a sustainable solution: tyres are transformed into powder through SETT technology and combined with natural rubber and responsibly sourced new materials to create durable, eco-friendly soles.

Ethical and sustainable practices

Indosole’s commitment extends beyond recycling tyres. Their natural rubber is ethically sourced from Indonesia and dyed using non-toxic, environmentally safe processes. The company has also developed Enviro Fibre, a water-efficient, naturally dyed material used for straps, ensuring comfort without compromising sustainability.Indosole sustainable footwear

The ergonomic design of Indosole sandals offers contoured footbeds for superior cushioning and stability, making them suitable for everyday wear, from beach outings to urban commutes. Their anti-bacterial and water-resistant properties further enhance functionality.

Indosole is a certified B Corporation, affirming its adherence to rigorous social and environmental standards. Each pair of sandals tells a story of innovation, craftsmanship, and environmental stewardship. By repurposing tyres that would otherwise pollute the planet, Indosole not only creates footwear but also contributes to a greener, more responsible future.

Indosole exemplifies how fashion and environmental consciousness can coexist. Through years of research, artisan collaboration, and sustainable innovation, the brand has transformed a global waste problem into a practical, stylish solution. Every pair of Indosoles represents more than footwear—it’s a step toward a cleaner, more sustainable world.
