Potato milk? Can you dig that?

A Swedish brand is taking the notion of plant based milk alternatives to the next level with their new innovative Potato Milk that is unlike any other.

Professor Eva Tornberg’s research at Lund University gave rise to DUG, a Swedish brand owned by Veg of Lund. Dug is created using a proprietary technology that involves a potato and rapeseed oil emulsion devised by Professor Eva Tornberg. Pea protein is also included.

Utilising the power of potatoes

The DUG potato drink is a remarkable combination of ingenuity and modern food technology. It is the world’s first plant-based milk manufactured from potatoes, and was introduced in Sweden in 2021.

Potato milk is a nutrient-dense beverage. It’s low in sugar and saturated fat, and it’s free of 14 of the most common allergens, including lactose, soy, gluten, and nuts, making it a great option for people who have food sensitivities.

It also contains calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and riboflavin, and is the only plant-based substitute that contains folic acid, a vitamin that aids in the production and maintenance of new cells.

The drink’s sustainability component, though, may be its most compelling feature. It has a 75 per cent reduced carbon footprint than cow’s milk. Potatoes are also twice as land efficient as oats and consume 56 times less water than almonds  and half as much land as oats, when compared to other plant-based milk sources.

DUG Original has a carbon footprint of 0.27 kg CO2e/kg, while DUG Barista and DUG Unsweetened both have carbon footprints of 0.31 CO2e/kg.

The taste

Dug is defined as having a “neutral” flavour profile, which means it may be added into tea and coffee, poured over breakfast cereal, or used in cooking without overwhelming the drink or food.

This can be advantageous because many buyers dislike the flavour of plant milks. They do not, however, employ organic potatoes considering organic food production yields are much lower than conventionally cultivated potatoes. All of the potato’s other parts are utilised except for the peel.

More in-store

DUG presently has 3 ranges.

DUG Original, an everyday great-tasting plant-based drink for coffee and tea, cereal, or simply drinking by the glass and can also be used for baking and cooking. Moreover,  it will not separate due to its unique potato and rapeseed emulsion, regardless of how it is used. It has a 5-day shelf life once opened.

Its ingredients consists of Water, Potato (6%), Maltodextrin, Pea Protein, Rapeseed Oil, Sucrose, Acidity Regulator (Di- and Mono-Sodium Phosphate), Calcium Carbonate, Emulsifier (Sunflower Lecithin), Vitamins (D, Riboflavin, B12, Folic Acid).

Second, their DUG Barista is smooth and creamy, as the name implies. It’s the acceptable replacement for anyone who wants to kick up their hot beverages a notch or simply enjoys the slightly creamier feeling. It can be whipped into a barista-style foam.

And lastly, the DUG unsweetened should be the ideal alternative for anyone who finds plant based milk too sweet for their taste.

DUG production is currently based in the United Kingdom. They don’t need to transfer water since they use a dry variety of potato called potato flakes. Because potato flakes are not produced in Sweden, the majority of the raw materials used in DUG are imported from Europe.

The product is currently available in the United Kingdom and Sweden, with an Irish launch planned for the second half of this year. Amazon, Waitrose & Partners, The Vegan Kind Supermarket, and Whole Foods Market all carry it.
