Biju Kuriakose: A partnership with bees

Circumstances and chances allow different people to have different opportunities in life. What you make of them is what truly determines your fate. Back in the 1980s, Biju Kuriakose had nothing but a plot of land, and keen observance of the hardworking little pollinators that were bees. He had a simple dream: to start honey harvesting, not just for profits but for supporting his community without harming the environment. In 1989, he started small, and worked to his heart content. However, people soon recognised the value of his work, and Biju Thadathil Farm Honey grew exponentially, and continues to reach thousands of honey enthusiasts today.

Honey on the go

Biju Thadathil Farm Honey recently came up with its latest innovation- honey spoons. Inside them is the best quality honey with notes of herbs and fruits sourced from their natural ecosystem, without any artificial flavours. They are compact, come in packs of 15, and can be taken on the go. As they are sealed to prevent any leakages or contamination, they also make a great healthy treat to add to lunchboxes or to be enjoyed in the morning. At present, honey spoons are available at the Biju Thadathil Farm Honey’s website in three variants- multiflora, tulsi and sidr. Apart from them, their honey comes in a multitude of flavours, like manuka, multiflora, ajwain, litchi, and more.

Flight to the forests

Biju did not make this far alone, he inspired a number of people to start a honey harvesting business, as well as to join his own venture. After some time from the start of the farm, he was joined by a team of 15 dedicated individuals who shared his passion. Together, the group travelled across India, collaborating with local communities and sourcing the finest honey. In doing so, they boosted the local economy, and more importantly, made everlasting bonds with entire families and communities. Their journey inspired the birth of multiple variants of honey Biju now sells. From New Zealand’s beautiful North Island, Bush honey was sourced. From the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, eucalyptus honey was procured. From Kerala, Biju’s home state, the distinct Multiflora honey was harvested. And of course, there was the Manuka honey, globally known for its potent health benefits. In total, 19 different varieties of honey were developed, each with its unique taste and flavour.

Biju never lost sight of his source of inspiration. After succeeding as an entrepreneur, he still loves the bees as much as he did as an amateur honey enthusiast. He calls them “partners of the venture,” and not just insects, and taking care of them is a top priority. He is thrilled about the newest honey spoon, and hopes that the brand will touch new heights through more innovations, and stronger connections with communities worldwide.
