The birth of dump In bin
The journey of Dump In Bin began unexpectedly during a drive along the Delhi-Jaipur Highway in 2016. As Rishabh Patel drove past miles of littered plastic waste, it struck him how much plastic was scattered across the landscape. It was an overwhelming sight, yet it sparked an idea. “It struck me how much plastic was just piling up everywhere, and I realised we were missing an opportunity to address this issue creatively,” Rishabh recalls. They aimed to help both urban areas and rural communities by offering eco-friendly alternatives to conventional materials like cement and concrete.
Like many start-ups, Dump In Bin faced a number of early challenges. India’s waste management systems are still largely informal, with much of the collection and processing handled by informal waste workers or kabadi wallas. Building relationships with these local aggregators and waste collectors was one of the first hurdles the company had to overcome. The challenge was ensuring that plastic waste could be sourced, sorted, and processed effectively, especially given the variety of plastics involved.
Another significant challenge was the processing of the waste itself. Plastics vary widely in terms of type, texture, and durability, making recycling them an intricate process. To create a high-quality product, Dump In Bin had to innovate, experimenting with different techniques to make the material stronger and more durable. Sourcing industrial waste—particularly automotive waste—became a reliable supply of high-quality plastic. While this approach increased costs initially, it ultimately led to the creation of more refined and durable products.
Innovating with plave: A sustainable alternative to cement
While Dump In Bin was making strides in waste management, Rishabh and Nitin’s ambition reached further. Cement, one of the most widely used construction materials, is also one of the leading contributors to carbon emissions. The duo aimed to create a product that could replace cement—one that would reduce carbon footprints and help lower plastic waste at the same time. This vision led to the creation of PLAVE, an innovative building material made from recycled plastic waste and construction debris.
PLAVE is a lightweight, durable, and versatile material with applications ranging from road paving to constructing drainage channels and other infrastructure. It is specifically designed to be environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Unlike conventional materials, PLAVE blocks are waterproof, resistant to wear, and offer enhanced performance, particularly in regions prone to waterlogging and flooding. Its composition helps create stronger, more resilient infrastructure, even in areas that suffer from heavy rainfall or harsh weather conditions.
A standout feature of PLAVE is its permeability. Unlike solid concrete, PLAVE allows water to flow through, reducing surface runoff and promoting groundwater recharge. This quality is especially crucial in urban areas where traditional infrastructure exacerbates issues like flooding and water scarcity. From day one, Dump In Bin has prioritised sustainability in every aspect of its business model. The development of PLAVE is just one example of their commitment to the environment. Through their recycling process, the company has successfully diverted over 48 lakh kg of plastic waste from landfills and oceans. In addition to recycling, Dump In Bin is working to improve the infrastructure for plastic collection and processing. The company has established a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) that streamlines waste collection, sorting, and recycling. This facility is helping businesses manage their waste more efficiently and providing valuable raw materials for eco-friendly construction products.
One of the company’s most impactful innovations is its “Recycling-as-a-Service” model. Under this initiative, businesses and communities can send their plastic waste to Dump In Bin for sorting and recycling. Dump In Bin has also worked to improve the lives of informal waste workers, providing them with safer working conditions and fair compensation. By integrating ragpickers into the formal waste management system, the company is helping uplift this often-overlooked segment of society and create more dignified work opportunities.
Scaling up and future goals
As of now, Dump In Bin is achieving impressive success, with monthly revenues of around Rs 10 lakh, driven by its growing recycling operations and the commercialisation of PLAVE. The company has expanded its waste collection services to several regions, making a significant contribution to the reduction of plastic waste and the promotion of eco-friendly construction practices.
Looking ahead, Rishabh and Nitin plan to scale their operations further. They aim to increase their capacity to recycle plastic waste and produce larger quantities of PLAVE. Their vision is not only to make PLAVE a global sustainable alternative to cement but also to introduce their waste collection and recycling services to more cities, creating a national network for waste management and resource recovery.
Rishabh summarises their vision: “We aim to prove that waste doesn’t just have to be discarded—it can be transformed, repurposed, and turned into something that benefits society and the environment. Our goal is to create a cleaner, greener future for generations to come.”
