Fiona Burrage: Scents of a place

Sop (Scents of place) is a bodycare and fragrance brand made in Norfolk and inspired by the local landscape and language. All the products are vegan and cruelty-free.

Sop was conceived and created by Fiona Burrage, photographer and creative director of Nor–Folk. The idea was sparked by the renovation of the Water Cabin, Fiona’s holiday haven on the Norfolk Broads, as a way to embellish the guest experience.

Sop

Norfolk is a unique and richly biodiverse landscape. Sop has been particularly inspired by the rivers in the Broads National Park, the sandy north easterly coastline and the rural spaces between. Locals continue the tradition of passing down a unique Norfolk language. These words are so beautiful in their simplicity that Sop adopted them for its range of scents.

Fiona’s family’s deep connection to the local landscape is rooted in the brand’s visual and verbal language. And this intrinsic sense of place became its name – ‘Scents of place’ or Sop – a nod to Norfolk and the emotive fragrances it conjures.

She says, “My aim is for Sop to be a celebration of everything it stands for and all that it’s inspired by – from the Norfolk dialect to the natural environment.”

Sop

Inspired by meandering rivers, vast sandy beaches, and the serene spaces in between, each product’s name is also rooted in the region, adopting Norfolk’s dialect to summon the scent and experience. The brand name and the product names have been influenced by Norfolk as a place.

All Sop products are crafted with care and the processes are responsible – driven by diligence and sustainability, rather than the bottom line. It’s a holistic, harmonious approach that celebrates wellness and wonder in equal measure.

Sop

What’s more, sustainability is key to Sop with every detail carefully considerate of the environment. The bodycare products are all packaged in aluminum bottles which are recyclable. The shipping boxes and bags are also fully biodegradable and made from recycled sources.

Sop also has a small range of seeds – some of which are included for free on customer orders – to encourage the planting of wildflowers and sunflowers.
