Abhishek Sinha, CEO, GoodDot: India is a massive market for plant-based meat

Udaipur-based GoodDot is working to take plant-based foods to a new level globally. The company manufactures, sells and even exports textured vegetable proteins using vegan ingredients and produces all kinds of plant-based alternatives for mutton, chicken, fish, egg, and other meats like the recently launched UnMutton Keema.

In an exclusive interview with Steena Joy, Abhishek Sinha, Founder, GoodDot, shares his insights on the plant-based meat segment in India and his future roadmap.

Tell us about the plant-based meat/mock meat segment in India, the opportunities and challenges?

India is a massive market for plant-based meat. 72% of Indians eat meat. The primary reason for the consumption of meat is taste followed by nutrition. As plant-based meats are continuously being innovated to match and eventually overtake animal meat in terms of taste and nutrition, more and more consumers are adopting plant-based meats in their diet.

There are two important challenges faced by the companies in this space. The first one is product development. Plant-based meat is an innovative space with deep food tech involved. So, developing the right technology and formulation is the first major challenge. The second challenge is to create large-scale awareness about the category. As the Plant-based meat market is at an early stage, a lot of effort needs to be put in by the companies to create mass awareness about this sector.

Consumer preferences have changed towards more natural/organic products post-Covid. Your insights.

That’s true. People have become more health-conscious across the globe including India. People are looking for products that are nutritious and immune-boosting. Products that have a negative impact on health are being avoided. Plant-based meats are being adopted on a large scale by people because of their high protein content, zero cholesterol, and high dietary fiber.
