Call of the woods: Deoja Forest Stay

As Winter arrives in its full glory, sweaters and shawls tucked away into the depths of your wardrobe make a grand reappearance. When dropping temperatures feel unbearable, the best comfort presents itself between logs of wood burning into the night, creating warm memories. What if this experience is enveloped in the mystical forests of Darjeeling, with a promise of the view of the hills nearby the next morning? Deoja Forest Stay is exactly the place to enjoy your winter holidays to the fullest. Situated just a little far from the main town, it is a little piece of heaven away from the hustle-bustle of Darjeeling, but the ideal location for a quick getaway without burning a hole in your pocket.

Browns and Greens of the forest stay

Deoja Forest Stay is more than just another place to spend the night in. It is made completely out of sustainable, locally sourced building materials like wood, bamboo, and cane, even the dustbins are made of the same materials. Beyond its structure, the whole concept of this homestay is eco-conscious. The cottage boasts of a garden in its campus, with outdoor seats and make-do tables sourced from discarded wood and tree trunks! For a visitor tired of living in a concrete jungle, the abundant greenery in and around the campus will be a breath of fresh air, quite literally. The space can be moulded according to the guest’s imagination- whether it is to work from home sitting in the balcony, or hosting a bonfire in a cosy shed late at night for conversations about life, it has potential for all of that!

Being nestled in a forest does not imply that Deoja Forest Stay’s safety or communication is compromised. It is close to the Dali Monastery, and can be reached through public transport quite easily, however followed by a long climb to reach the cottages at the top through stairs. The experience of staying in a comfort zone out of one’s home is still intact at the forest stay. Exquisite Darjeeling tea and electric kettles to prepare it is present throughout the property, and a dining area is present for all to access. The food is comparable to any other restaurant, just with the added bonus of a mesmerising view and natural seats made of tree trunks. Being located in Darjeeling- the Queen of Hills with a generous amount of British colonial influence- Deoja also has options for delicious British and Irish breakfast for interested visitors. Or else, warm parathas with sweet tea can be readily made available for a hearty Indian breakfast.

More than just rest

Just a few months ago, a camping site has been introduced at the location, where guests get to enjoy camping in a luxury tent, without the insane amounts of stress accompanying the planning. Deoja Forest Stay also introduced a range of other activities for an offbeat Darjeeling exploration. Guests can go bird watching, partake in organic farming, sweat a little in a forest hike, and end their day with authentic Nepali food. Not to forget the delightful sunrise and sunset among the clouds, this can be a dream destination for a little vacation.
