BOHECO: Hemp for Life

Who would have thought that a company would set up a business in cannabis?

BOHECO or The Bombay Hemp Company is an agro-based enterprise incorporated in 2013. It is one of India’s foremost homegrown industrial hemp and medical cannabis company.

Cannabis belongs to the Cannabaceae family. It is native to the Himalayas and has been a part of India’s culture since the ancient era. This plant offers several beneficial aspects from making food, clothes to ropes to tie cattle and  traditional medical herbs. However, the positive uses of cannabis are still very much unknown to people living in the cities.

BOHECO’s vision is to enhance and improve both lives and the environment by making health, wellness and nutrition products from cannabis.

Birth of an idea

It all started when seven students namely Jahan Peshton Jamas, Avnish Pandya, Chirag Tekchandaney, Delzaad Deolaliwala, Sumit Shah, Yash P Kotak and Sanvar Oberoi of the Mumbai-based HR College of Commerce and Economics came up with the idea of creating a vertically integrated company that produces hemp to make textiles, building materials, Ayurvedic remedies, health and wellness products.

The company went through several initial hurdles. However, BOHECO finally collaborated with government CSIR laboratories on research projects to produce standard varieties of cannabis.

An eco system for hemp

Once it completes the research, BOHECO aims at assisting local farmers in cultivation of the crop by providing optimum seeds. Also creating awareness of the advocacy of industrial hemp and impart its benefits by building an ecosystem around it.

Uttarakhand became the primary Indian state in 2016, to permit large-scale commercial cultivation of industrial hemp. BOHECO received its licence in 2018, to work with hemp seeds and cannabis leaves. And later in 2019, the company finally launched its health, wellness and nutrition brand, BOHECO Life.

Currently, the company is selling its products through its own e-commerce website and channel partners. The founders believe that cannabis and hemp products can help sustainably revolutionise people’s diet and lifestyle.
