A broccoli with green spikes?

Romanesco broccoli, also known by several other alternative names such as Roman cauliflower, Broccoflower, Romanesque cauliflower etc is a unique looking vegetable which is a resemblance of broccoli and cauliflower and features a distinctive fractal structure. They come from the Brassica oleracea spices.

Romanesco is an edible flower bud with green spikes and each of the bud spikes are formed with a series of smaller buds, all arranged in an hierarchical order. This alien-looking vegetable was first documented in the 16th century. They have a mild-flavour and a delicate texture, tastes more of as nuttier and tender. The leaves are chewy and crisp and turn sweet when cooked. Make sure you do not over cook the vegetable.

Most of the time Romanesco broccoli is confused to be a hybrid between cauliflower and broccoli whereas they botanically differ in many aspects.

They are cool-season crops and the seeds are planted during the month between late July and early August. They take almost 75 to 100 days to mature from germination. They grow upto 80-130 cm tall and the leaves grow from medium to large in size.

Health benefits 

Romanesque cauliflower is a superfood and nutritious. It is rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, carotenoids and has dietary fibre. It is not only packed with nutrients but provides iron, zinc and folate when consumed.

Romanesco is loaded with vitamin A that helps eyes to function well. It improves heart circulation. It has antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that fight infection and diseases.

The more you consume Romanesco broccoli the lesser the possibilities are of developing lung stomach and lung cancer. They have healthy digestive fibres that are employed as an aid and boosts the digestive system.
